Are roads more congested than say, 20 or 30 years ago? I don't remember all this traffic as a kid, but maybe I have rose colored glasses.

Population has grown by about 100 million in 30 years and nobody chose to spread out.
So yeah

Yes because of population and very very poor city/town planning.

Rural people flee to cities to escape poor rural life
City people stay in cities
Only the rich flee back to Rural and buy giant plots of land for privacy

Traffic scales with population density. Has your area had an increase in population?
There's a huge part of the country with DECREASING traffic, because people are moving out of those places

Nothing comfy about living with a few dozen alcoholic low IQ farmers. Cities grow increasingly more dense. However this phenomenon will likely stagnate too as population is decreasing in most civilized countries. 20 years from now as boomers die and zoomers become adults, traffic will be less dense.

>to live in the projects
They live in the city outskirts, commonly known as suburbia. That accounts for a vast number of the population. Another good percent live in apartments (non-projects) in the cities. Usually these are high rise, maybe 4-6 story buildings. Depending on age of the city there might be town houses too of varying sizes. The projects/ghetto are completely different part of most cities.

Also rural life isn't always comfy. Drug addiction is a huge issue and like >>28484186 said, most want to escape it because job opportunities are limited, esp if your family isn't a big ranch/farm.
