>>28483941 (OP)>Do they want to make it unappealing so that people won't buy it and they can discontinue it?This is what I think. A lot of automakers want to kill of certain models to save money on production costs but in order to justify this to upper management they have to be able to demonstrate that "people just aren't buying it anymore". Ford did this with the Panther platforms, post 2003/4 models were often heavily de-contented from earlier models. Same for a lot of brands.
>>28483964>The old one was just as hideous.that's subjective, but it was an objectively better car. The previous model Accord with the 2.0 liter turbo engine and 10 speed transmission could do 0-60 in 5.5 seconds which is pretty peppy for a Honda Accord. The new ones are all Hybrids with CVT transmissions. This alone makes it a soulless vehicle aside from the exterior design.
Personally though I do think they want to kill it off. It used to be that the Civic was a tiny compact car that you bought if you were poor or super into fuel efficiency, and the Accord was what you bought if you wanted an actually halfway decent car that was tolerable to operate.
But now, both cars have grown a lot, and there's arguably only minimal difference between the Civic and Accord now. It doesn't make sense to produce both of them when they are so similar. Therefore, the rational thing to do is to eliminate one model, and focus on making the existing one even better. This is probably what Honda will do with the Accord. Since the Civic sells better and has better name recognition, they'll get rid of the Accord and just make the Civic slightly more luxurious, and probably slightly larger too
