I feel like every other bmw I see on the road is a completely different model. Like some random letter followed by random numbers. Do they actually have the highest number of car variations because it seems like it. most of them look like shit too...

Those random numbers are just for different engines and power outputs. A 320D and a 330i are the same model, just with different drivetrains.

They invested in CLAR, a modular platform that they can build a Z4 on or a 6000 monster XM or an electric i4.

Itโ€™s cheap for them to make variants and the platform itself is relatively cheap materials. Theyโ€™re killing VAG business wise right now. I think VAG is making slightly better cars thiugh.

>completely different model.
I watched an interview with a designer on YouTube and this is intentional. Back in the day, BMW felt that their models looked too similar to each other, so they intentionally did this bullshit to make them all distinct. I agree that they all look like trash (except for the 2 series exterior; interior is trash).

Jeep for example, they have like 10 different trim levels of a Grand cherokee, correct? Using an X3 as an example, instead of (base model, Laredo, Limited, Summit, SRT, trailhawk, trackhawk) they have a 28i, 28D, 30i, 35i, and M40i. 28d is a 2.0L diesel, the 29i is a turbocharged 2.0L gas, 30i is non-turbo 3.0L gas, 35i is turbo 3.0L, and m40i is twin turbo 3.0L. You have your 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5 series cars (compact up to saloon), then X series SUVs. Nothing crazy. If anything, domestics have far more model options, but they dont have more than the options list at the seller to tell you the difference.
