Using an X3 as an example, instead of (base model, Laredo, Limited, Summit, SRT, trailhawk, trackhawk) they have a 28i, 28D, 30i, 35i, and M40i. 28d is a 2.0L diesel, the 29i is a turbocharged 2.0L gas, 30i is non-turbo 3.0L gas, 35i is turbo 3.0L, and m40i is twin turbo 3.0L. You have your 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5 series cars (compact up to saloon), then X series SUVs. Nothing crazy. If anything, domestics have far more model options, but they dont have more than the options list at the seller to tell you the difference.
