Why are Japanese engineers so good in terms of vehicle longevity? Do they not care about planned-obsolescence and the investors' portfolios? Is that why their economy is shit?

They design their cars with the average American maintenance schedule in mind, which is to say none at all. Other manufacturers expect proper maintenance, a foolish expectation.

>Is that why their economy is shit?
Basically yeah. They're not trying to come up with a clever way to always be extracting cash from consumers and potential consumers, they want a good product to be durable and something to be proud of owning. The top priority isn't minimizing costs and maximizing profits.

I think it was Honda and Toyota that had a similar engineering philosophy of "if something breaks, find out why, then make it better so it doesn't break".

American engineering is "how cheap can we make it while still working for the length of the warranty period?"

German engineering seeks to make something simple as complicated as possible because autism or something.

English engineering was "Don't bother me during tea time"

If you never give a car any power it can last a lot longer. All of their cars are anemic as fuck and that's how they last longer.
Factory crippled performance, sold as a "benefit".

I don't drive Japanese cars. I don't think they're as long lasting as others think they are. I think they've been psyoped into thinking Japanese cars are actually good.

that's something I will never ever understand.

>make cars that can easily hold up DECADES and run a million miles
>cheap out on a bit of wax for some unknown reason so your car turns into a pile of sorry ass brown dust in just a couple years
why? they even live near the sea with salt water everywhere. they SHOULD know better.

From what I recall, those 2000s Mazdas had almost no effort at zinc galvanization or other anti-corrosion treatment. Once the rusting starts, it's going to be everywhere soon.
Most decent brands did at least electroplating if not hot dip galvanizing by the 1990s, some fancy ones as far back as the late 1970s.

Japs have pride in their work like no other. Even if the job makes them want to neck themselves from working 7AM to 9PM they still put every effort into doing their job properly. The Japanese stuff that I've worked on (not cars) always makes me think, "how the fuck did they make a profit from this?" there's so much hand finishing and hand assembling to a very high standard. Not sure how many other countries can say that about their workers.

I own a 61 year old V8 Ford with 300k+ miles.
A 16 year old Turbo I6 ford with 250k miles, and a 15 year old Mazda with 100k miles.
