Pic unrelated, sort of

Long story short my car is shot. Head gasket failure and potential rear main seal leak. Not worth it for me to fix. I don't have the tools or space to fix on my own, and the cost of fixing it could get me a decent used car. Here's my dilemma.

I was work from home the last few years, but recently took a job and I think the commute killed my car. It wasn't a bad commute, just a few miles. But basically every day I was driving my car 5 or 10 miles and pretty hard since I didn't want to be late to work. I heard that doing a lot of short trips like this can fuck the engine over with short heat cycles which basically warp things and can lead to these kind of leaks.

Problem is, I live in the city, and I moved even closer to my job. I might stop driving to work altogether, and just walk or take an e-scooter when I get it fixed, but I'm still going to drive my car to the grocery store and to see my parents once a week and they're about 10 miles away on the highway.

All this is to say that I just don't drive very much these days. I rent an apartment, so getting an EV is out of the question since I can't charge at home. Is a Hybrid my best option? I don't really want one, but more than anything I don't want to get a car and then cause damage to it's engine with the way that I drive. Also, are there any hybrids which are full size rear wheel drive sedans? thanks

This is, absolute max, a $1500 job at at a reputable mechanic. You're not buying a worthy used car for that. Get it fixed retard.

my mechanic said it would be between $3,000 and $4,000 and my car would be in the shop for at least 3 weeks. He said the head itself is damaged and that the fix is to take off the heads and send them to a shop to be re-machined. I drive a crown Vic with 200k miles on it. Even with it fixed I'd be lucky to get $2500 for the car. Oh and I also put $2,000 into it in other repairs within the past couple months. No matter what I am getting rid of this car soon as much as I don't want to

Why didn't you say there was head damage then? Thats a whole different discussion to gasket/rear seal replacement

I leave my cars running when I go into some stores, maybe you live where people stealing stuff has become normalized.

Yeah this. For really short trips (ie 5 miles) its not a bad idea let your car idle for a bit before or after just to heat things up and lube the engine. I'll leave my car running in Canada but when I drive down to the states I make sure I keep things locked, lot of poverty and diversity down there.

This would be a situation where an electric car would be ideal tbqh. I know you mentioned not being able to charge at home, but inconveniencing yourself for an hour a week to go to a charger is better than prematurely grenading an internal combustion engine.

There might also be chargers near the grocery store. A used EV could be convenient enough if OP can just leave it there while shopping.

A hybrid could work, but at least Toyota's "full hybrid" tech seems best for longer periods of driving at moderate speed. If you start one in cold enough outside temps, it has to run the engine for a while to warm up and charge the battery, and by the time it's done you might already be there. Doesn't save much fuel like that.
I suppose the engine's not under much stress at least---at low enough power demand it just quietly spins at 1.5k to 2k RPM, presumably mostly acting as a generator.

$3000-4000 is used engine replacement territory, get quotes from other shops, see what they will charge to replace the engine with a used one from LKQ, that's still cheaper than another car
