If you want a serious choice as a car for women, then just a standard econobox, especially a Japanese one would do. Something that is relatively bulletproof and maintenance friendly is a big plus too.

The M52B28 is bulletproof, the 4L30e has a factory shift kit, soft top can be manually operated from the driver's seat when the hydraulics inevitably die like all convertibles.
Suspension is standard e36 so I slapped on brand new singe adjustable coilovers for $500
Rust free, 120k miles, tear free leather for $2800 with a clean accident free title.

Next best option was a boxster with a cam bearing threatening to ruin the party at any moment or a 996 with the same threat and a LS swap being the most economical engine replacement strategy, but no auto option.

Nice, my girls M54 was overheating quite a bit, fans were bad plus PO tried to put some stupid leak seal in the coolant. Flushed the block multiple times, replaced the gunked up thermostat, new fans and a new radiator just to be sure. Bought a water pump but ended up shelving it as the one in it was still fine. Went into the red several times when it was overheating, supposedly these engines do not take heat very well (so I read anyways) and I was considering timeserting it if bad head gaskets or warped head, but luckily I haven't had a chocolate milkshake problem yet. Did a combustion gas test and compression test on each cylinder just to be sure. No problems in the last 10k miles. Knock on wood it stays that way.
Been a fun car, now just replacing suspension.

generally, aluminum motors don't handle overheating well since there is so much shift under thermal expansion and the stock headgaskets can't take it.
It's why we explicitly went for the M52 instead of the M54, though it's still an all aluminum motor in the Z3. The M52 2.8 is alot more conservative 30 year old motor than the 3.0 M54, and the 2.5 has 10% less power than the 2.8 while having dual VANOS and higher compression.

Still good motors, just need more maintenance.

Well so far so good. I have read about a guy turning a 3 series w/ an M54 into a track car and just beating the piss out of it, overheating it, etc. And it holding up. Anecdotal but still, I think these engines are stronger than people give them credit. Still it was a cheap beater car and with how much use we already got out of it, it doesn't owe me anything. Any more miles now is icing on the cake. I drive work trucks so having a nice little Beamer in the garage is great to take out and about on the weekends. If this thing takes a shit, I will absolutely buy another or just a new motor.

Replaced all the common failure points:
oil starvation from low oil - valve cover gasket, oil filter housing, pcv valve cleanout
VANOS failure - oil feed line, chain tensioner and guide, timing chain between cams
Overheating - flush block and radiator with hose, new pressure cap, dual electric fans
General - basic tuneup with NGK iridium plugs, fuel filter, air filter, serpentine belt and tensioner
Driveline - transmission service, differential service (had water in it)

Literally 2 weekends of work in the backyard on ramps and $400 in parts and premium fluids.

That car will now run until it's totalled, then I wanna throw on a 507 body kit and LS swap it.

unironically true with some Miats, my friend has an ND2 RF and I'm not even 6' but I genuinely couldn't drive it with the top up, my ear was practically on my shoulder to fit my head under the roof and the only way I could've conceivably fit would've been sliding the seat forward to where my knees were on the dash and then leaning the seat so far back that I could barely reach the wheel, which isn't tolerable.

BS about the 911s though, I know a 6'4" former pro hockey player gigachad who's owned multiple and fits in them fine, even with a helmet on.
