>you can eliminate more than half the circuits on an automatic transmission without negatively affecting its ability to function
So new cars being shit is confirmed as intentional and has nothing to do with "emissions" or "cost-saving" or "emm pee gees"
>muh automatic tranny appears before post #4

most of what you're seeing on the right aren't channels, it's just structural webbing since it's a cast piece and not just a chunk of billet like the one on the left. but yes GM transmissions are pieces of shit. they're on like revision 300 since they made the indestructible 2 speed powerglide right after WWII and every one has been less reliable than the one before it.

Let’s be charitable. It’s a ZF8 and GM bean counters didn’t want to pay ZF for the 8sp and instead opted to develop and fool their own which means spending a shit load of money up front before making one unit and then selling thousands before making a profit which means the same bean counter took the ZF8 clone and told them to make it for $100 a unit and so now we have a CAST magnesium (lmao) cheap as fuck unit that they can sell for $6k so the bean counter looks like he’s smart.
Of course the ethics of the thing don’t matter to him, he probably got a promotion out of drivetrain a year after launch and never looked back.

Good to know, I have a GMC 1500 with a 6.2 and really considered selling it because of shift issues on the POS 8L90 exactly as he described, shudders, downshift clunks, rev flares. I might have to try this valve body. That said, this will be my last GM truck, I am so fucking fed up with modern GM. Still love their older engines, but fucking hell they destroyed their reputation with all the transmission and engine issues now. Just complete fucking junk. I used to be a rabid GM fanboy too, but even I am fucking done with them.

This is why bean counters should be bullied and pushed down stairs, not allowed to make decisions within a company. All they do is ruin things.

They never are held accountable for it either. They screw their customers over for thousands and move on nameless and blameless to the next promotion.

The majority of those voids are not used and are there to make casting less complex.
I read "pulsedelete"s press release. Its just a billet machined valve body that is less likely to leak and cause low pressure situations for servos. It doesnt change how the transmission functions at all.
Literally answering a question that only the top 1% of race cars asked.
Its a meme product designed to separate fools and their money.

People designing better parts to fix Chevy transmissions is nothing new.
They were making harden'd sun shell gears for 4L60E many many years ago.

>>28488959
The powerglides nearly invincible because it's basically a giant fluid coupler.
As far as I'm aware there's no gear to gear or clutch to clutch engagement in that transmission.
It's kind of like a hydrostat transmission in a tractor.
No matter how hard the Mexicans try they, can't break them.

Look up 8L90 shift issues and see how many people complain about it.
They put this transmission in lots of pickups and SUVs, not just track car Cameros. It's extremely common for these transmissions to have shift issues, def not just "1% of race cars". They thought they fixed the issue by replacing the old fluid which was hydrophilic (yes GM engineers are actually retarded enough to have shipped these things out with ATF that attracted and held onto water) even with the new corrected fluid (pic related) they still have shift issues.

That guy claims he has 8 speeds with his billet valve body running 200,000+ miles.

I think GM tried to solve an issue but inadvertently created an even worse issue with those solenoids.

knowing gm, i wonder how much of it was the engineers warning management that hydrophilic fluid is retarded, and management pushing back and threatening dismissal if they didn't stick with hydrophilic fluid just because it was cheaper up front.

Wouldn't surprise me in the least. Bean counters are running GM these days, straight into the fucking ground.
The old glory days of hot rodders turned engineers calling the shots are over. Now it's just a company of fucking bureaucrats and bean counters destroying the little bit of pedigree they have left.

I broke a powerglide with repeated neutral drops. I wasn't even trying to abuse it, but I was young and stupid. The car had a tendency to die at low rpm. That and a lack of power brakes got me into the habit of shifting into neutral at every stop and giving it some revs before shifting it back to drive. It didn't even take that long to kill it. First gear just got more and more slippery until the engine would just rev but the car wouldn't go anywhere.

>pulse delete
Every automatic valve box ever has had accumulator pistons to MODERATE THE CLUTCH APPLY FORCE and it's a *very* important part of the design so the shifts dont burn the clutches.
Transgo makes billet, triple sealed pistons for damn near every transmission ever made. Replace the phenolics with those. Don't get rid of them.

I just find it extremely hard to believe this fixes anything without causing different problems.

that just sounds like the clutch packs got fucked bit by bit till they could no longer transfer power to the wheels. Not quite the same as shearing all the teeth off a gearset because engine was just too stronk and tires had too much grip

"Bean counters" don't actually exist, they're just engineers who don't give a fuck about cars but need them to last 100,000 miles so they use FEA and material science (wasn't as common after 2000s) to make it as cheap as possible to get away with lasting that amount of time.

Seriously most engineers don't give two shits about cars in the automotive industry.

Company laid off like 3/4 of their staff.
So Luckily we can basically tell them to fuck off these days.

Present your EV's software code then bend over and prepare to be judged with a cactus and a running start.
