Just had an argument with my dad about buying a manual car. I'm from the south and will be temporarily moving to the Midwest where there will be a lot of snow. I've got a great reliable car now, but after working a week of my new job, I've learned that I will likely need a 4x4 of some kind (not due to the snow, but rather mud and other obstacles off-road). I am not very good at driving stick, but I like cars and have wanted a manual car for a while. My dad got super pissed after hearing this and insists I need an automatic and that I should just put off a manual vehicle for some kind of project car 10+ years down the road. Obviously I understand his concerns, and somewhat agree. An automatic would be easier and likely better in many situations. That being said, I will be buying the car myself, and it's up to me whether or not I listen to him. How correct is he /o/? Is driving manual in the snow really that bad? Should I just suck it up and get an auto?

Learn to drive stick and you will not have a problem with it. If anything, I would advocate it, but you might have difficulty since you are used to autotragic.

you're gonna wish you have an automatic when you try to rock yourself out of getting stuck in snow by alternating between reverse and drive

manuals are way better in the snow, once you get used to them. having control of the clutch and gearing helps a lot to get out of slippery situations. it's usually safer to engine brake in slippery conditions as well.

I dunno what you're talking about bud. That's perfectly possible with a standard transmission, in fact I'd guarantee it's easier because it won't creep when in drive which fucks up momentum. I've done it many times in my 2wd shitbox with balding summer tires.

A manual in the snow will show you how shit your ability to feather a throttle is. Pro tip: it'll be shit if all you've done is drive autos. You'll get the hang of it and develop better driving skills for when driving not only manual cars, but autos as well.

unless your manual is awd or 4x4 there's no difference from that automatic (assuming it's rwd or fwd). Anyone who tells you otherwise is talking about their ass.

What kind of auto doesn't have paddles in current year? This is a moot point unless you're getting an extremely soulless '00s econobox or some ancient classic car.

You have more control in the snow with a manual. People drove manuals with no ABS for decades.
Manuals may not exist or be 2-3x the price of other cars 10-15 years down the line. Your dad just thinks you'll fuck up somehow.
