335i e92 n54/n55 or a newer (2/4 series) 40i? i can't decide. The former has more soul, subjectively it's the greatest looking 3 series personally. The latter is a better daily driver, better fuel consumption, more reliable, also better for the ego as it can reliably be tuned to 500hp. Does the answer just come down to soul vs status.

I had the E92 335i (Le Mans Blue, it was based) and it was one of the best cars I’ve owned. It was excellent and I enjoyed everything about it. Get the 340i, especially if you are in the US. Any 335i is going to have moon miles, neglect, sick mawdz and all that shit. Even if you find one in very good condition it’s going to cost as much as the 340i which is the better overall car

Drive one first. They’re all underrated from the factory anyway. The issues with these isn’t the lack of power, it’s how it puts it down. The manual gearboxes are not good and whilst they do ride and steer nice (especially the 335i) they’re not competent at 8/10ths or above. I would look for as clean, well specced of an example as possible and enjoy it for what it is

If you are going to go down the modification route then spend a few months saving a bit more money and get an M4/M3

Anon fuck the 335i and go E92 M3. Its just a better (and more reliable actually) E92 3-series than the 335. I own an E92 M3 for 3 years and no regrets also everyone else i know whos owned them has literally had no regrets either. People who "upgrade" from an E92 M3 to an F80/F82 M3 or M4, constantly come back to E92 or E90 M3.

Now, onto the B58 cars you mentioned like the "40i" models. The B58 is an unbelievable modern marvel of engineering. Nearly 500 wheel HP with only a catless downpipe and OTS tune. Crazy stuff.

If you want problems, go 335i n54
If you want raw, undeniable soul and an absolute monster in the corners and on the backroads, E92 M3.

If you want reliable, straight line speed, and a super comfortable and up-to-date modern daily driver, go 40i B58 cars.

335i real world MPG for daily driving was high teens low 20s. Do what he said and get an M3. It might cost more but it will hold more value and it’s a better ownership proposition. If you don’t want to pay that much then get a -40i of some description

I owned 2 N54s.
One was tuned and very reliable, the second was stock and a nightmare. It's a lottery.
It's hard to argue against the E92 335i even with the potential reliability nightmares.
Hydraulic steering, 6mt (becomes excellent with a short-shifter kit), ease of tuning and, most importantly, ease of swapping suspension to M3 suspension.
It's not hard to have an E92 335i with all M3 suspension. Diff is a bit harder, M3 needs some custom mods but many torsen options exist.
Even without M3 suspension, HR sway bars and a decent set of shocks makes it very competent.

From your posts it seems like you arent actually well off enough to own a nice bmw or maintain it. I guarantee the reliabiltiy meme falls apart the second you start bolt ons. Unless with "reliable" it means swapping critical and expensive components every 10k-20k km or the engine explodes itself totalling the car. There is a reason why you never see high mileage 500hp tuned/ turbod+ supercharged bmw's on the used market. Furthermore
