Here's a photo of an earlier model with shorter fenders. They were shitting them out up until the end of the Soviet Union (and maybe a little bit after that) and some believe they have better quality because of the whole "glorified Soviet manufacturing" meme. Others (me included) just like the looks more (or maybe it's the baby duck syndrome in my case). There are practical considerations as well, e.g. the hood's leading edge not being damaged by stones. Next time I tell you what the nizkaya panel is.
