I test drove a genesis that had a ""Hologram"" speedometer and fuckin loved it, but hated the car. Seen these aftermarket for like $100. Do they actually work?

HUD is a well proven tech from the 1960s
The only thing that matters is being able to correct the projection angle.

the aftermarket ones are ok, they plug into the ODBII port and need a sticker/film piece installed to properly reflect the image.

cars with it built in have a coating on their windshields to reflect properly but that makes the windshield way more expensive to replace.

What's a "hologram speedometer"? Did they reinvent HUD?

Not a coating, but a layer inside that reflects the image but prevents it from appearing double. They do cost extra, for my car it's like 5x the price of a regular windshield. Expensive, but it's way better than having a sticker.

my Kia Stinger's windshield is like $2000 because of the HUD film, even more than replacing one of those ridiculous sealed LED headlight pods.

Yeah, and American cops fine you according to what they feel today about breaking the limit. So nobody in traffic knows exactly what the real limit is and everyone drives accordingly (i.e. at their own speed). Whereas in other parts of the civilized world everyone just stays within 1 kph of the speed limit from which the fines start.

Kek, mine's 2x cheaper, and that's for a Lexus OEM part with integrated defroster.
