>>28494133 (OP)I used to love the VR6, after fawning over all the cool videos of them and using them in video games (Gran Turismo and Forza Motorsport) as a kid. After owning 3 of them (VR6 swap MK3 Cabrio, MK4 GTI 24V, MK4 12V Wagon), I realized that despite their "unique" exhaust note, they're heavy, underpowered, expensive to modify, have terrible stock engine mounts, and are all over worse performers than many other cars in their price bracket, used and new.
They're really cool on paper. But, like most German cars, are terrible to live with. They're belong in the "Fuck you, I like it" category of ownership. They have no other really redeeming features.
Not even the R32, which is massively overrated. VW guys are gluttons for punishment. They're the equivalent of a German Honda Civic competitor and it fails at in terms of bang for buck in both markets. They don't hold up to "severe" use. They require much more intensive maintenance. All to be slower than a 1.8T, which is lighter and has more potential out of the box, even though it's rods are practically made of Swiss cheese.
Do yourself a favor and skip buying one of these. Drive someone else's to get the curiousity out of your system.
