luckily i live within walking distance of an autoparts store. so even when i take parts of my car off and can't drive it, only to realize i have the wrong fucking part or tool, i can just walk to the parts store.

When you run out of cars the motorcycle makes the world right again.
I love having that option.

Registration for me is like $40/yr per vehicle. Insurance isn't that bad because you usually only have one vehicle as your primary commuting vehicle. The other additional vehicles are cheap to insure.

Upon learning that not everyone lives in a beauracratic nightmare full of corruption, confiscatory taxes, and an evergrowing population of criminals, the coastal poster lashes out to protect his unearned superiority complex.

Not a flyover shithole. It's a rich oil city of over a million people.

I am in this situation. Coincidentally, what's a cheaper reliable shitbox to get when my other cheap reliable shitbox is down? Maybe I'll get a Twingo.

depends on your insurance.
My second car (old mini) costs just under 100€/year for example, started at 82 when I got it a few years ago

Doesn’t work that way, you need minimum three reliable cheap shitboxes:
>SB1 down
>You drive SB2 a couple of weeks, also breaks down
>You still have SB3
>You will never fix SB1, for SB2 there’s still hope, because it was only the starter this time, well it at least starts, maybe, it isn’t at least locked-up, no point wondering why the coolant level is so low
>SB3 is now promoted to SB1, while you start searching for a new SB3

Well we all gotta start our shitbox collection somewhere, if I could afford to go buy 3 shitboxes in one go I wouldn't be buying shitboxes.

None of that matters to me because the parts stores or hardware stores never have what I need. Not a tool, part, things I could rig up, nothing. They'll have stuff close to it, but doesn't work. Yet I keep going back. I keep thinking "maybe they'll have it" but nope. They never do. I search around town just go head back home and order it online like I told myself to. But I had to check.

Then the few times they do have what you need it's chinesium shit that's costs 3 times as much as what you would have paid online for a better quality part

Two of my shitboxes are on permanent historic plates. $150 one-time registration, can't be driven in January. Two are on regular plates - $85/yr and $100/yr respectively. One doesn't have plates at all and I just no-cost online transfer one of my regular plates onto it to drive it.
Two cars have liability insurance, one is full coverage, the other two are uninsured. A quick phone call to the insurance agent switches coverage around as I need to.
