It's in case you need to fill the trunk with a bag unspecified liquid
Also so that ridiculous fucking stupid ass bullshit characteristics of the trunk aren't given away. This was more of a problem in ye olden days when the filler neck, the spare tire, the jack, etc. were positioned in seemingly the perfect position(s) to render 2/3 of the trunk useless. In the age of the CUV, and despite manufacturers' best efforts to make life a living hell, trunk space measurements are now more accurate than they've ever been, that being roughly cubic and without asinine protrusions

It's for groceries and small cars anon.
You can fit just so many, but the individual items are small enough and the bags are deformable enough that you operate with volume not individual dimensions.
You can't fit anything worthwhile in a small car though, so for the bigger cars you go and look the actual dimensions.

That's why cargo capacity is measured in litres.

A cubic feet is about 30 liters, it's easier than MPGs

mpg is way better than liters per 100km. why canโ€™t you just tell me km/l that would make sense. Why does it have to be backwards?

MPG is worse because you fuckers have two different types of gallons and speak languages that differ only slightly while discussing the said MPGs online.

It's about the size of a square milk crate, the national standard of measurement.

And more seriously, fuel per distance is like fuel per time. If you know how many hours you want to sit idling or how many hundreds of klicks you want to travel, you multiply (easier than division) and get the amount of fuel you need for the task. And usually it's easier to get the exact distance or time spent than the amount of fuel, either in the tank or already used, because the data the car can show you is way less precise.
Distance per unit of fuel is good if you know the exact amount of fuel but want to know the distance, and that's kind of backwards. My goal is to get to the known destination, not to drive as far as I can on a full tank. Again, all this is based on the fact that it's easier to multiply than to divide.

I can find no reference. But then again your post is the usual semi-coherent babble I've come to expect from a Trump supporter.
So, unless you can provide a link, it didn't happen.

Want real shit?
UK measures distance by miles, fuel consumption by MPG but fuel tanks and pumps by the litre.

because cubic feet sounds better than admitting the wheel wells have encroached on all the usable space and you're not fitting anything substantial in there

gpm/L/100km is better than mpg/l/km; going from 35 mpg to 40 mpg is different from going from 5 mpg to 10 mpg

the krauts use what they call VDA, which is basically a block that represents 1 cubic litre, and they fill the trunk with as much of these blocks as they feasibly can to then get a cubic metre measurement that is realistic. SAE does something similar, but they use smaller blocks so it can fill up more room, so you end up getting cargo sizes that are bigger than they actually are.

Blame the EU when they standardised weights and measures. We had to fight to keep our pints for beer.

Plus we can math. 4.5 litres to the UK gallon (as near as damnit, 4.546 if you want to be pedantic)
