Classically trained military pilot, no flight simulator bullshit, years of experience, and tons of luck. Still the only emergency water landing in aviation history without a single fatality. He's the antithesis of DEI hires

What situation? It was a freak accident. There was a flock of geese in his flight pattern and they just so happened to take down both engines. 1 in a million accident. He saved everyone's lives by landing in a river. No jeet could have pulled that off

If I recall, he had glider experience, and prior military experience. Also, Airbuses are very forgiving. All he really needed to do is pull the stick all the way back during the ditching, and the airplane would automatically slow down and gradually lose lift without allowing the plane to stall.

In theory he could have probably glided to Teterboro airport, but this only would have really been possible if he knew the engine failures would happen, and he prepared for this in hindsight. In reality, no human would have reacted quickly enough to make the decision to go to TEB and execute the plan. There's the initial startle response and troubleshooting phase that eats up time.

People always neglect to mention his copilot and all the ferry captains that instantly went to the crash to rescue the survivors and bring them to shore. One of the few truly patriotic irl American kinos in the last 20 years

Perfect example of good conditions allowing to salvage a shitty situation. Good plane, good instincts, good piloting, good weather (calm waters, ditching in the ocean usually kills almost everyone on board, in comparison), excellent rescue efforts from everyone in the area.

If you're referring to the movie, that's all played up for drama as most stories need an antagonist.

armchair experts who didn't need to consult their crystal ball two weeks prior because they just knew a flock of geese was gonna be in the way and kill both engines and were prepared for this exact situation.

It was skill.

The 2 things that did it, he hit the APU which is the little generator they use on the ground as soon as he realized both engines were gone. I don’t think that was standard procedure for the engines out, so it was his quick thinking to turn it on which lead to him having more control of the airplane. It’s like having a generator to run your power steering pump and brakes in the car even if your engine died. Anybody else would’ve followed the manual and never turned on the APU and tried to manuever that big bus in the sky with no power steering or brakes.

And then #2 was the glider experience. Being able to judge everything very quickly and not stall it and drop out of the sky.

Captain Sully Hanks acted very honorably there as well.
