I was brainwashed into thinking AWD would make me invincible on my commute to the grocery store in light rain.

I wanted a manual wagon that powers the rear wheels and it turns out that's really slim pickings.

Basically this >>28501532. If you want more than 8 inches of ground clearance too you're pretty much railroaded into the brand. Shame the engines are loaded with footguns.

Cheapest car I could find at the time with manual that was small and sends at least 50% of torque to the rear wheels. That's it.
I wanted RWD but it was the best I could find at the time and then the coof and SIM cards happened so I'm stuck with this forever unless I come across a cheap Miata.

Had a v6 sedan that barely got ~18mpg in town, wanted something with more interior cargo space and better mpg. Along came a cheap lesbaru outback h4 with the 5spd manual for 25/28 mpg and proper awd so I made the switch and that's what I've been driving for the last 10 years.

Feels good to flex on fwd normies getting stuck in snow and shit. Also pulled a rwd 2500HD silverado out of some soggy grass+mud the other day because why not.

>>28501527
Also this. Probably 99% this, 1% the other stuff.

I'd drive one if not for pozzed drivetrain combinations and Subaru not having a track record for longevity like Toyota or Honda did.
>can't get a manual Outback anymore
>SUVs the size of old Expeditions CVT only

I provide certain services almost exclusively to data centers in my state, often after an "event" that impacts the normal social order. For all the money they spend on these facilities, a surprising number of them, even greenfield locations that were well funded, have shitty access so AWD is essential. Plus the weather is often bad.
Most of my equipment needs protection from the elements which makes a truck not the best choice. I needed more square feet of cargo space than cubic feet due to the nature of the equipment, so many small SUVs and crossovers were out. In the end, my Subaru was the best balance of features that fit my needs.
One of my coworkers has a Dodge Magnum and that works pretty well too but it gets really shitty gas mileage. We get paid a flat rate for each mile of travel which means he burns up more of that in gas than I do.

Because I bought the meme that they were reliable. It's currently sitting in my garage with spun cam bearings and I'm not sure I care enough to fix it.

Let me guess, Cobb off-the-shelf tune with a downpipe and you never replaced or removed the turbo oil feed banjo bolt filter? Many such cases. I'm almost at 150k and I redline almost every single day, only changed a belt and a clutch.
