not slight against EVs, just the Chinese. the rest of the automotive industry will continue to invest in EV. its too much of an advantage for zero emissions and fuel economy standards.

First they might have just abandoned the idea because the ideological gap is large. Second, they might have abandoned it because clearly we are moving towards a post-NAFTA world where Mexico and Canada are not considered equivalent to the USA. So they might instead build a factory in the US.

BYD's been selling very poorly in parts of Europe too. Their Finnish importer dropped them a few days ago because they've sold under 200 of them this year.
For comparison, 5409 new Toyotas were registered in the same timespan.

I think BYD slightly passed Tesla's sales in Europe recently, but that's mostly just because Tesla is fucking dead in many countries.
BIt of a shame since Teslas are still among the most efficient EVs out there, even if the interior and build quality are kind of shit.

BYD gives these cars out for free via leasing. Car sales mean jack shit when it comes to Chinese manufacturers. They have to severely undercut the competition and sell at a loss to even come close. Ultimately tariffs and Chinese image will kill their brands in thr west. If you want EV, people would rather buy Kia if they want to avoid Tesla.

Kia EVs aren't even that big in Yurop. Volkswagen, BMW, Skoda, Audi and Renault all sell more EVs here. Tesla and BYD are at the bottom of the top 10 EV brand list.
But yeah, many of these Chinese brands are likely doomed in the long term. The market is saturated and selling a Zhingzhong Coksuk Gofast is kind of hard, even if they've mostly figured out styling and comforts in addition to EV tech.
Their implementation of EU nannies is also pretty shit and at least very annoying when not actively trying to kill the driver. Maybe the Chinese are used to quality like that, I don't know.

Some Chinese manufacturers have actually pivoted towards trying to take over the EU hybrid car market since those are cheaper than EVs and aren't hit by tariffs as hard.

The problem is what happens when your first years of warranty runs out and you take that Zhingzhong Coksuk EV to the mechanic, fuck is he going to do when he's never even heard of the brand? IMO if you want to break into a market as a new brand, you should start at the bottom and work yourself up from that. These Chinese manufacturers start at the top, in a hyper competitive market where the buyers are extremely picky. But the problem with EV is that of course even a budget EV will be 25k Euro at the absolute minimum, which is similar to many premium ICE cars just a few years old.

So they can't compete at the low end due to tariffs and the used market existing and they can't compete at the high end due to extremely high standards. They should probably focus more on improving battery tech and having western car manufacturers reliant on them in that way. These new LFP batteries will do wonder to break many stereotypes about EVs, and then semi solid state is not too far away either from the looks of it either.

Improving battery tech is just saying "more capacity in 5 years" on a loop without actually improving anything

Seems like this would be mainly due to the $7500 federal tax credit for EVs being ditched. For a low market brand like BYD, that tax credit was a significant percentage of the sticker price. Georgia used to be the top state in the US for EVs and quickly dropped to being one of the least popular states, all because the state's tax credit for EVs was dropped.

That's why you lease, like with a Vinfast. Apparently there's a dealer 5 minutes from my house but I've never seen a sign or anything and their website barely works. I would never buy one of these things but if I can lease it for $175, I'd do it.

>take over the EU hybrid car market
How? The chink has no good domestic designs or manufacturing of gas engines to mate up with a hybrid system to even come close to compete with Toyota, Honda, and various other established manufacturers that has invested in hybrid designs for years.

they also just throw the car away at the end of the lease and won't care if it's tough to fix or whatever.
it's actually much harder to make a good economy car than it is to make a richfag larpmobile full of stupid pointless tech like being able to watch wuxia tv dramas on the instrument cluster while aimbot bunnyhopping down the road like it's fucking counterstrike

like nigga who fucking cares cars are for driving to a replacement for your computer desk or cell phone. dumb fucking chinese.

They do have cheap batteries and plentiful EV powertrains. The EU emissions tests give retardedly good scores for PHEVs with enough range to complete the test mostly on electric power, so it doesn't really matter if it consumes more fuel than a Toyota once the battery's empty. It'll have super low tax anyway.
At least BYD's recently said they will be manufacturing a PHEV version of their Atto 2 EV in Europe since EV demand isn't growing fast enough.

The SAIC-owned "British" marque MG Motor's also released at least one hybrid crossover with a planetary gear power splitter, though it doesn't seem capable of continuously varying the ratio like Toyota's HSD.
It has way more powerful electric motor-generators than most Toyota hybrids, though. Maybe those help. I think the gas engine's based on the one in the Chevy Volt, so it's not like it's hopelessly outdated.

You're already fucked with most EVs if you have to have any kind of work done. You have to have a Tesla towed two hours away to get to the "authorized" repair center and I live in a major city with tons of those things driving around. Most people don't realize how fucked they are with EV repair until it happens. I only have anecdotal experience from friends that have the Leaf and Teslas, but the manufacturers honestly just expect you to pay thousands of dollars to work on those cars. The Leaf stopped charging after three years and they were told it would cost $3,500 to change the charging ports and the battery couldn't be replaced if that was the problem.

It doesn't have to compete if the competitor isn't offering one. I wouldn't mind a prius competing minivan.
Even if MAXUS is the go to brand for shit quality but nobody else is offering.

people who lack technical problem solving capability will always get fucked over as early adopters no matter the market or product. aside from the consumer-unfriendly way the cars are made there is also the fact that anybody with a fucking brain just shouldn't buy anything made from new, unproven technology, especially when they live with great examples of why (laptops, cell phones), but we don't educate people to make intelligent decisions based on objective observations nor seeking out or absorbing learning experiences like how fucking incredibly ass it is to simply use a computer or phone nowadays. nobody wants that shit in a car.
