Why do carmakers constantly come out with new engine designs instead of refining existing ones? Like they will have a tried and true, economical, reliable, performant engine known to be bulletproof and then shelve it in favor of a new engine that turns out to be a shoddy piece of shit nobody likes.

Chevrolet Small Block V8, is producing since 1955 and is still in production today. While it's no longer a standard engine in new GM vehicles, it continues to be produced for crate engine and aftermarket sales.
