Just got my license and I’ve been looking for a solid daily driver. My neighbor is selling his 1999 Ford Thunderbird Super Coupe for $8,250 and I think this might be the one.
It has the 4.6 V6, which I know isn’t the supercharged 3.8 everyone talks about, but from what I’ve read it’s reliable and has decent torque. I think it’s similar to the engine Ford used in the F-150s, so it should be tough enough to handle daily driving and maybe even some light towing if I put a hitch on it.
The car has a salvage title from Hurricane Katrina. It was in New Orleans when the storm hit, ended up getting flooded, and my neighbor had it trailered back out here. He told me it ran fine before Katrina, just had a couple of minor issues, but he never even tried to start it afterward. It’s been sitting on his property ever since.
It’s been stolen three times, so it must be worth something.
It has 224,000 miles, which doesn’t scare me. That just tells me it was driven and probably maintained for most of its life. The paint is sun-faded but the body looks straight and solid. It’s all original and hasn’t been messed with.
Motor Trend tested one of these back in the day and got it up to 154 mph before the engine finally let go. They said it felt like it was just starting to wake up at 130. That’s crazy for a car this size.
I know $8,250 sounds like a lot, but used car prices are bonkers right now and this actually seems like the best deal I’ve come across. It’s got a story, it’s unique, and I think it’d be fun to bring it back to life.
Are these things fast? Anyone here daily one?
