I wish giant personal luxury cars hadn't died. There's something extremely based about a gas chugging coupe that's almost as long as a Suburban.

But that defeats the point of a personal luxury coupe. The whole point is to have a gigantic comfortable fast stylish FUCK YOU to necessity and practicality. Let others ride around in microsized cuckboxes and capable 4x4 boxes, you're taking up a lot of space and riding in style because you can afford to.

Your phone can tell you the time, you wear an expensive watch because you can.

Lower centre of gravity, smoother ride quality, and, of course, looking fucking cool rather than looking like you're picking the kids up from soccer practice. Shit, even if you were doing that a Continental is the sort of car your kids would want to be seen in. It OOZES cool. It makes you look like a Bond villain. A chevy 'burban just makes you look like a faggot, by contrast.

Are you a Euro or something? A Burb has way the fuck more interior room than an old land yacht. Even a little Tahoe completely eclipses a Rolls Royce exterior size wise.

>>28508686
Which means fucking what in a situation like this? Who is tracking or canyon running their luxury yacht or luxury SUV? Also if COG is so important why is a Jeep faster around a track than a 2500lb sports car?

>>28508695
How so? The SUV is more comfy and luxurious.

>>28508729
It doesn't really matter. It's not like the average Rolls is a Phantom anyways. Most on the roads are Cullinans, Specters or the shorter wheelbase sedans or coupes. The Burb is much bigger than these which is the point I was making. My point is extremely large and luxurious vehicles are still a thing.

I'm glad someone else appreciates e'm. They're kinda overlooked because Chrysler was never really super popular as a brand. Dodge and later, Jeep were the moneymakers, and Chrysler itself was a bit hard to pin down. It wasn't quite luxury in the same way as Lincoln or Cadillac were but it wasn't a "Mid-range" brand like Mercury or Buick, either. Still, pretty damn cool.

I know they did because I was alive then and my parents generation bought many of them. Those were great family cars and though smog motors are slow stock it was expected anyone who cared would swap car, /intake manifold and camshaft. The 460/C6 in my dentside Ford wrecker came out of a Lincoln which is a common swap as they're respectably tough.

The highway ride was glorious.

I've always heard it that Chrysler as a whole tried to slot itself between the existing price ranges. So if you had Ford, Mercury, Lincoln, Dodge would go between Ford and Merc and Chrysler would go between Mercury and Lincoln. This is probably why Chrysler was perpetually broke.

Apart from the constant oil crises of the '70s on, the main reason cars went down in size was actually... Garages...
>"Earlier in my Cadillac career, somebody had taken a survey of our ownersโ€™ garages, and a lot of them had garages that were attached to older houses. The houses might have been big, but the garages werenโ€™t, because nobody anticipated cars growing to that length. They're easy to daily as they ever were but beginning ownership with a thorough visual inspection is a very good idea. I replace all fluids including differential lube and brake fluid on purchase.

Keep an ignition computer and a pickup in your glovebox because Ford, GM and Chrysler all had issues. (The module pinouts matched for a while so some non-GM owners used HEI modules instead but I just kept stock GM and Ford parts).

Inspect engine bay and underdash wiring. Engine bays are simple to rewire if an area is brittle. Do one and you'll understand others. Do read service manuals and understand how their charging systems work.

I replace both power and ground battery cables and use dielectric grease anti-seize on the hardware.

I don't have any pics of my F100. I really should take some though it's not pretty.. It's a '76 F-100 cab on a 250 chassis for the thicker frame and 8-lugs with C-6 and Lincoln 460, previously a 390.

It has a push bumper common to the era and a Holmes 440 boom with a double-length stick (stock boom is box tubing so when I ordered a stick to replace the bent one I didn't shorten it much). I used it to raise building panels since I don't need to tow with that boom (my Chevy crew cab has an old Century wheellift) and it's handy as fuck around the yard.

It was a bargain when I bought it from a coke head who got shot at while driving it. One bullet got the front and rear windows, one the cab above his head and one centered on where his spine would have been had he not ducked.

The two main reasons I'm hesitating on buying it are that I'm not sure how much of my saved money is going to need to be used to repair the roof on my house, and it also feels unnecessarily spiteful to buy another separate vehicle just because I'm sick of working on my old Crown Victoria
Like I can't just fixate on every single '70s land yacht that pops up on Marketplace, there's no way that's sustainable
And yet, besides the state of the vinyl roof, that Thunderbird looks mint.........

Look at other examples of those tbirds and Lincolns (the even more fancy versions) so you can get a feel of what they can be optioned with (interior wise) and the prices for them.

I prefer the leather or cushy couch seats and that one you posted doesnโ€™t have them. Donโ€™t settle for less!

Paint on the hood is dead judging by the poor quality of the reflection, though that's not unexpected nearly 50 years later. That t-shirt is clearly a buffing cloth from the color of the staining.
>A/C
Interesting how all the a/c vents are turned closed. Probably needs new a/c hoses as those always leaked after a few years due to the material shrinking and causing the clamps to lose tension. Compressor clutches were also problematic so if it looks heat discolored it's probably ruined but those are replaceable separately from the compressor. Try to keep it R12 though. No one will have it so you'll have to go ebay for that.

OK, just the usual dry rot then. Wanted to make sure it wasn't the other issue where the rear pillar rusts out just above the quarters. Car seems like it's been covered most of its life. It'll deteriorate quickly if left outside for extended periods. If the paint on top is kept clean, waxed and, most importantly, covered it can go for years more so you'd have some time there. That top otoh has to be fixed soonest. If for no other reason than self-image since you must look at it every time you approach the car. It also affects how you think of the car. Left like it is you'll come to think of it as a some pos that can be treated like a dumpster.

In all, seems an easy refurb candidate for a nice classic on a budget.

Got to thinking about this, and you realize this one will too. Just the headlight doors being up says that system has been neglected. Did they cap it off or just letting it be a vacuum leak? No telling until it's yours. Of course that's a minor subsystem that's not critical but is emblematic of prior owners and their views towards maintenance and repair. Most approach car repairs as "just make it work (cheaply)" instead of "make it like it never happened". IME it takes months to find and sort out a prior owners bodges and "temporary" repairs (of which there is nothing more permanent). On top of that every seal and gasket on the thing will be leaking to one extent or another because they just weren't meant to last all that long to begin with and it's been many times that long now. I'd be stunned if the radiator didn't need to be recored because all the fins are rotted and it's seeping from one or more spots, and so on. It'll be a project for sure but at least you won't be having to source trim pieces, upholstery, and other hard to get items.

More time consuming than anything else. The worst of it is getting the old stuff off and cleaning for the new glue to be applied. It's a contact cement so both the car and the vinyl have to be coated, you see. You'll probably want two people to lift and lay the vinyl on (don't let it touch itself!) and then spread it out smoothly so no bubbles or wrinkles form. There should be youtubes on doing it.

That really lines up with the Crown Vic situation, the previous owner did a lot of stupid stuff with the air intake and the window motors and just a bunch of other annoying little things that I've had to fix or pay someone else to fix.
Of course, this thing looks like it has been taken better care of, and the owner says it runs? But of course so did the other one, they even drove it to my house.
If I go to look at it I'll definitely have to look at the state of the coolant, transmission fluid, see if it's all just dirty and brown or if they've actually kept up on things.

'79 is not a preferred year for Ford products due to decontenting. Things like metal escutcheons becoming plastic, lighter upholstery materials, 400 as largest engine, and so on. They claimed this was for fuel economy but they were really on the brink of bankruptcy that year.

It's kind of amusing how similar that TBird and this Lincoln are mechanically. The Lincoln chassis is '65 Galaxie front and rear while the 'Bird is that only on the front with a slightly cheaper suspension design on the rear. The Lincoln will have the Ford 400, and assuming the 'Bird had the 351M, which is a variant of the 400, both will have the C6 automatic. The Lincoln will have the better Saginaw P/S pump, and probably the Saginaw steering box too, along with the far smoother Harrison A6 (from GM) compressor. Likely has a 110-125 amp alternator too.

The whole point of these died when the internet became accessible. All of a sudden you didnโ€™t need to drive from city to city to do business deals, you just sent an email. In Europe the same thing happened. The London to Frankfurt drive for that big finance meeting wasnโ€™t required anymore, because they could do it remotely. If you did need to send a top executive somewhere, you could do it in a full size saloon or SUV and it was better this way because the PA and lawyers could go with him and reduce costs

Concorde made sense in much the same way. You could be in New York City from London in two hours or whatever. Which is great, but when you can just conference call the NYC office there isnโ€™t any point. Business owners can take the LearJet and the execs can take whatever flight, if they do have to fly. This is why the used value of these cars went down the can. Billy Boomer didnโ€™t need one anymore, so they got sold to strip club owners and other scumbags who never maintained the things

Like jaaags, astons, front engined ferraris, maserati granturismo.
Though not sure if many fall under 10kโ‚ฌ

Only the British cars got close in size. Bentley Continental (not the VW version) was massive but only had the wheelbase of the Lincolns - it was still nearly 2 foot shorter. All the German stuff was smaller, even the CL Mercedes was the size of a Cadillac Seville of the time and dwarfed by the American full sizes. BMW 8 Series was roughly the same dimensions as an SN95 Mustang

For me the van is sentimental, so the price was well worth it to have all of the rusty panels cut out, new ones welded in, and the whole thing painted.
Of course he didn't do the fiberglass roof, but it's not like that can rust anyway.
