Awhile back I bought one of those portable solar panels for hiking. Thinking all I need is to charge my phone and a few small gadgets. After my first trip out backcountry i immediately went back to carrying my power bank. I was dumbfounded by how inefficient those solar panels were despite just wanting to charge my camera and phone.

whenever a solar cell or panel does not receive sunlight โ€” due to shading or nearby obstructions โ€” the entire installation generates less overall solar power. This is known as PV system shade loss

I'm well aware that solar needs sunlight. That's not an issue when hiking, at least out west where getting above or beyond treelines is a non-issue

The point is even partial obstruction of one panel pretty much kills the entire array.
It's all or nothing.

wouldn't it make more sense to put those solar panels on the roof of a building then occasionally plug the car into the building?

Solar panels are a scam in most areas. It takes 9-15 years to pay off the cost of installation on your home even after the crazy government subsidies they give out. A solar panel on a car would never pay for itself over the entire lifetime of the car.

>Solar panels are a scam in most areas.
I've noticed they only really work in areas where electrical power is either unreliable or unavailable, i.e. collapsing government or extremely remote. At that point, having any electricity is better than nothing.

In ideal conditions the panels could output about 300W per panel, so 9 panels would then produce 2.7kWh/h. So if itโ€™s really sunny a base model X could maybe get to 25% charge a day out of it. But since the panels are mounted horizontally I would expect it to be closer to 15% in otherwise perfect conditions.

It is popular on smaller remote cabins in Norway. Just a small panel for some basic lights and a fridge.

While I'll give them credit that rotating the umbrella after folding it is a clever move, if they just made the car able to handle the sun and rain it would have solved more problems than the umbrella does.
