I got a crack on the rim of my 2009 328i. Anyone have any experience with repairing cracks like these? These are cheap alloy wheels but my shitty wheels are impossible to find replacements for.

The only correct way is to remove the tire, drill a hole at the end of the crack, grind out the crack into a vee shape from both sides and then fill up the vee with welding. Then of course finishing and balancing after that.

It's a specialist job, JB weld won't do the trick.

Actual wheel shops won't touch it if the mounting flange is cracked. Liability issue.
You are correct about the process and you might find an independent willing to do it but for the price its not worth it unless its some ultra rare piece.

Yeah I work in a refinery and we grind out cracks all the time so this seems like an easy fix. I just don't know if your typical autoshop knows anything about welding but that might be my problem to find one

Seems like a fair bit of material to remove. I would have thought to remove as little as possible, just enough to arc a bead

weldlet/metalworklet here, is this done to eliminate stress risers/points? is it similar to how people say if a gearbox gear tooth is chipped to file it smooth so no pointy edges?

If the crack still exists after welding, there is an area of metal that is not joined together. The crack could also start again. Grinding all of the crack out makes sure the piece will be one homogenous piece at the end.
