why are they the only Japanese company that do well internationally? Honda, Subaru and mazda sells in NA and Suzuki sells in shithole nations but Toyota seems to be everywhere

Suzuki is everywhere but North America. You lot don't buy small cars, even when they're good, so there's no point being there.

Honda sell well in the UK, as do Suzuki.
Subaru used to sell well during their rally days, but they've fallen off now.
Isuzu pickups are very popular with Bong farmers, as Toyota have priced themselves out of the market with a Hilux costing over £35k now.

Should add, Honda is popular in the UK, because they build them here, in Swindon. Toyota only build hatchbacks here. The rest (HIlux/Land Cruiser/Lexus/etc) they import from Japan.

The current Hilux also just sucks compared to the DMax. Even the Ranger is better, which is grim.

until it hits 100k miles, then you have to tear the block down to replace the wet cam belt

At least in my corner of northern Yurop, Subaru only sells overpriced SUVs, Suzuki has the cheapest AWD and nothing else, Mazda only sells gas guzzling crossovers and Honda is overpriced + has a very thin dealer network.
Toyota offers a wide range of cars from the little Yaris to wagons, SUVs and trucks, and their hybrid tech actually does something, which is great for emissions taxes if you don't want to bother with an EV or PHEV. Plus you can find a dealer or authorized shop in pretty much every town.

Maybe some of these brands are big in other countries, but seems like most of these Japanese companies have decided they can't compete on the mainstream Euro market and have decided to focus on their own niches.

In Brazil, only Toyota, Honda and Nissan are popular; Mitsubishi sells overpriced SUVs and pickup trucks, Subaru only sells Foresters, Suzuki only sells Jimnys and Mazda exited in 2000. There isn't a lot of variety here, even popular brands don't sell many models, like we don't even have accords or camrys.

Mazda has too small of a lineup to really be a big car seller. No wagons, pickups, coupes, real SUVs or city cars. Electric and hybrid offerings are non-existent. So that limits ability to be a big brand anywhere when you sell 4-5 cars to Toyotas 10-15 depending on the market.

For some reason Mazda tends to be quite popular in Australia, Canada and New Zealand.

Mazda6 can be had as a wagon, BT50 is their midsize pickup (based on an Isuzu), and the Mazda2 is a good little city car.

I do like that they've pretty much sold the same car for over 10 years, but it's getting so dated that they now sell a Mazda-badged Toyota Yaris (XP210, not the US Yaris) as the "Mazda2 Hybrid" in some countries.
The XP210-based Mazda consumes around 20% to 30% less fuel, accelerates faster and has lower tax in countries that tax by consumption or emissions.
Think I preferred the actual Mazda2's looks, though.

isn't the Pajero one of the most popular SUVs in Latin America? (along with the Cruiser)

That has been discontinued. Mazda 6 was discontinued in North America in like 2021 too.

Honestly Yaris Hybrid drivedrain is very competive for the segment in being economic and reliable - these are cheap cars after all - but Mazda literally just rebadging Toyota is a lame effort. Yaris has pretty awful interior and sound dampening even in the class and Mazda could spin the platform to something better looking and feeling for 1-2k more with same powertrain.

Yup. The Corolla's already pretty weak in this regard, but with the Yaris, you'll get a sore throat from trying to communicate with the passenger on some roads.
The road noise is so loud you might not even notice that you've been screaming to overpower it.

At least in Brazil, no. They sell Pajero here, but they are really expensive. Most people buy budget SUVs, like the Nissan Kicks, Citroen Basalt or, if you are a little better off, a Jeep Renegade.
