Color preference just changes with time, it's very societal. Think back to the 70s to early 80s, there was a lot of brown. Eventually people who are young right now will look back and think all the white and black minimalism is ugly too.

Conventional greyscale paintjobs are timeless and I don't think people in the future will think it's ugly perse. What people do often look back on and go "what were we thinking?" are usually the super trendy colors of that era. Today's might be those flat paintjobs like primer grey, sand, seafoam, fabric softener blue etc

It's because of resale values. A colour may be divisive, but greyscale is inoffensive and won't typically push a buyer away.

Ex:

To an extent, that's true. Once companies figure out how to milk it, they'll keep on until no more money is left to be found. But the particular trend still has to start somewhere in the mind of someone, normally influenced by what they have experienced.

eh
the first one would be pretty good if it didn't commit the cardinal sin of glossy black rims
it NEVER looks good
matte black sometimes works out, but rims that are blacker than the tires are disgusting
the green would be good on something cute and round with light accents, but angery rav4 with black trim doesn't make it pop, even with normal wheels
khaki, on the other hand, would benefit from being put onto something big and burly and gets lost on the civic
primer gray never looks good tho, and primer gray on black fucking wheels is about as bad as it gets

How many different shades of brown did the Citroen SM came in?
The top 2 in this picture, the rose one and the maroon one, I've never seen.
The beige and darker metallic brown were more common. The medium brown at the end I hadn't seen either, not sure if it's just the dark metallic under different lighting.
They also sold in in snot, vomit and purple. Hilarious.
