my car started flashing the coolant low message on the dash. it's a 2017 volvo s60 and the manual says to use Volvo Genuine Coolant/Antifreeze, while Autozone suggests blue pink yellow or orange. I popped the hood open and it looks like there's green in the reservoir. Do I just pour more green in?

You can just piss in it. Not kidding.
I guarantee this is a troll thread but whatever - antifreeze is all the same shit, ethylene glycol and you mix it 50/50 with water. But you can get away with just plain water if you live somewhere that doesn't get below freezing.

Take it to a shop, have them flush the coolant and put new one in, take note of which one they use so you can refill with the same one. Color really isn't indicative of anything nowadays, it's there so you can notice leaks more easily and you shouldn't mix colors so it doesn't turn some weird brown. Also you shouldn't mix coolants because the base might be different and that's no bueno. In a pinch you can top it off with distilled water.

I should do that but I don't have the money for it at the moment

I think the coolant was a good inch and a half below the min line. would it still be better to fill that with distilled water?

Well you can look into flushing the coolant and adding new one yourself, your car's manual should tell you what kind and what mix to use. Failing that yeah fill it up until at least the min line with distilled water.

interesting, that might be the one that's already in my vehicle. in any case, it probably wouldn't be safe to add this without flushing the existing one right?

If it's indeed the same there's no harm in just adding more. They tell you to flush every X years to clean out the old coolant and such, but you can top it off between changes no problem.

I bought the car used so I can't say for certain that it was always filled and topped off with the correct stuff. the last time I took it to a shop they remarked that the coolant looked watery and might need a flush/change soon. would it make sense to order this and add distilled water to the minimum line until it arrives? I've never flushed coolant in my life so I'm not sure I can do more than add on top of it. alternately I could add 50/50 yellow and make sure to take it into a shop to do a full flush in the next couple months.

Different motors need different coolants because of the material of the engine, the temperature they heat up to and so forth. Which is why coolant is usually blue for Asian vehicles, orange for American and green for everything else.

For a while, but water tends to cause rust in the cooling system.
>>28518777
Depends on the car, but generally not.

Dead wrong, if you mix the IAT and OAT coolant it turns into gel and destroys the car. It's not all the same. OP do not listen to this moron, follow what your manual says

coolants are colour coded for a reason. if it's green, put green in. make damn sure it's actually green
