explosive bolts/airbags that push the hood up to reduce pedestrian impact injury from smacking into the engine or other similarly hard bits underneath, and a courier that can transport dangerous goods (like replacement explosive bolts/airbags) is not cheap at all
various parking and/or other sensors in the bumpers that need to be replaced

those two cars?
Would be a challenge to get repairs over 1.2 thousand combined.

'73 or so. The extra funny part is how the rear bumper is the pre-regulation style, '73 bumper regs only applied to the front

Well, in an 80 mph crash a new car of equal size to that chrysler will do better
Or course, how often does that happen?

its absolutely insane how expensive modern cars repairs are.
a fucking bumper used to be a single piece plastic molded part with a few metal brackets inside for mounting.
now its like 5 pieces with 10 fucking sensors and 20 pieces of ugly black gladding held in place with clips that all break from the lightest fender bender.
what the fuck happened to the 5mph bumper laws?

The Chrysler guy was lying for attention. The Kia turned in front of this Silverado, got hit and flipped around, and grazed the license plate off of the Chrysler. It was not rear ended.

Changed to 2.5 mph bumpers in the early 80's after insurance companies realized that 5mph bumpers actually cost a shitton more to fix at 6mph+
Manufacturers quickly figured out that a flimsy plastic moulding would do the job at 2.5mph, with the actual crash "bumper" structure buried behind it. When you crash at a few mph the car is technically still "driveable" and is "undamaged" so it's 100% legal and fine even if the computer throws a fit and forces you into limp mode

Wrong. Just because a car isn't worth much doesn't mean time at the body shop is any cheaper. Replacing the bumper, hood, grille, head lights, and airbags in a Honda Fit will cost more than the car is worth, not be cheap because the car is cheap.

This is such bullshit, cars should be like bumper cars.
