I won't even reduce it to one model, you had a Touareg with a V10 diesel, you could get a Q7 with a V12 diesel, you could get a Cayenne with a V8 and a manual, not to mention the original Cayenne Turbo and Turbo S which 20 years on are still competitive with modern "sport SUVs" (it had 550hp and did 0-60 in ~4.7).
On some of these like the Cayenne and Touareg you could even have optional rear and center locking diffs, plus they also featured a low range transfer case standard. Oh, and they could tow around 8,000 pounds, or around as much as a Chevrolet Suburban from the same year could tow.
They started to get a bit soft with the next gen iterations. Although you could still get a few noteworthy models like a manual base Cayenne or diesel IMO they never were as hardcore, do-everything as the original models were. They're all kind of lame now.
