Prius-Generation-II

I just bought a cheap gen2 prius that had its battery replaced 2 years ago. I'm gonna use it for a beater and my 110 mile daily commute through cowboy country.
What am I in for?

A boring a reliable car.
As far as commuter car, the Prius is the GOAT but you don't drive them for the enjoyment of the car.

My sister bought one for 2K which she also used as a beater hauling around equipment and horse feed for her equestrian stuff. Thing smelled like a barn, was beat to shit, had over 350k miles, and the hybrid didn't work but still got 45 mpg. Then the brakes locked up on her so she sold it for 2K and got a Rav4 which got totalled out by hail damage. Good thing too because it was 15k and she was paying 15% interest so when it got totalled the insurance paid it off entirely.

its only 55 miles each way.... and its $9 more per hour to go to that facility vs in my local area which would still be like 30 mile 1 way commutes.

The way I look at it is based on the gas I normally spend driving my truck and what I will save its break even is in 18 months, if I take into account oil changes and other maintenance its ~15 months... and also it can get all the hail damage and normal wear and tear I typically get instead of my truck.

iirc they are kind of slow. and the battery ventilation intake has a filter that can get blocked with crud.

I know I know, but that is the way of a construction worker. Sometimes the jobs are farther away than others. Its not like working at a starbucks that is a 10 minute drive away.

Its just a very light car that's low to the ground and designed for utility and fuel efficiency so you feel the bumps in the road. Its not terrible or anything, its just typical of a compact car.

Some Euro compacts are surprisingly stable and quiet. They almost feel like larger cars, which isn't necessarily a good thing if you enjoy your small car feel, but they are fairly quiet.
Toyotas somehow tend to feel like at least 1 segment smaller than they really are, at least in terms of NVH / refinement.

You'll likely need to replace the transmission, the CVT is shit. Had the same gen, everything on mine shat the bed around 60-80k miles and rhe car was on its last leg by 120k. Toyota suspension notoriously has a short lifespan and I didn't feel like replacing it because I didn't plan on keeping the car long term. The thing was running on the ground by 120k and the transmission was about to blow, all kinds of fucked up noises. I did replace the fluid at 80k with OEM. The battery also made it to like 80k before losing significant charge, the dealership denied my warranty claim because I hadn't had it inspected every 20k miles which you need to do for the warranty to be valid (and pay their $400 inspection fee every time).

If the AC fails, it costs like $3000 to repair. Same price as the hybrid battery IIRC.
