Sadly no. They're just not strong enough to support the weight. A 4 cylinder Silverado gets worse mpgs than a V6 F150.

Sure. Light-duty trucks are a segment. Perfectly fine for carting around a couple hundred pounds of stuff in the bed.

Maybe large displacement torque monster commercial style 4cyl engines but the pumping losses and shit would get you V8 fuel economy so it would be pretty pointless. To get enough relevant power out of one to move a modern truck you also need to run them at unreliable power levels or make them weigh 1000lbs which again is pointless when you can just use a V8.

Trucks were originally inline-4s. It is a return to tradition.

For sure, old Datsun trucks had an unkillable 4cyl for many years. They make great farm/light duty vehicles, and are super easy to work on. Similar situation with the earlier ford f100/rangers. Unfortunately I think everyone is too full of themselves for those vehicles to do well in the US currently. Now the real question is ; will rotaries will ever be put in another truck?
