No A/C
No power steering
No water cooling
Heater barely worked
Vast majority was 4 speed manual
Just 50 HP (at best)

This car for 1975 sold brand new fifty years ago was just $2999. Adjusted for inflation that comes to $17,920 in today's money.

If it was made again, would you buy one?

>Kia Picanto
Not sold in the US
>some Dacia
None are sold in the US
>Fiat Panda
Again, not available in the US
>petrol Yaris
Ok, here we go. Now this guy has quit being sold new here about five years ago. Not many (if any) are left on a dealer lot you could buy "new" and no real replacement. Hardly a contender.

I have a '73 Super. They're not. It's really the easiest car I've pulled an engine from and done a clutch job on. I rewired the whole car in a weekend. The aftermarket is huge and parts cheap. Every part of the car to work on is documented on YT.

Try that on any other compact car.

you can't use inflation calculators because they are extremely inaccurate to actual purchasing power. the average price of an ounce of gold in 1975 was $160 an ounce, so the car would have been the equivalent of 18.75 ounces. 18.75 ounces in today's dollars is ~$63k. so in real terms, a stripper Toyota crapolla is roughly 1/3rd the price.
When you hear stories about boomers buying muscle cars working part time minimum wage jobs, it's because they were making $75 an hour in gold terms.

A combination of cheapness, proven track record, the overall counter culture of the hippie movement.. And like most WW2 era cars there was a significant focus on drivability.

These cars did not get outpaced until there was a real need for water cooling AND fuel atomization.
Both of these did effectively not happen until there was stricter emission standards.

There's a great story about Toyota engineers in SoCal working on the corolla in the late 60s.
The engine was severely underpowered and did not do well with the hills and canyons around L.A.
When they were finally able to pass a beetle on a grade on the freeway they knew they were making progress and had a product they could sell.

I've been wanting one for years. The only thing holding me back is their lack of ability to reach highway speeds (a necessity where I live). Don't want to engine swap, it's gotta sound like a bug too.
