There's no old cars here in texas. Even when one eventually pops up, it's inevitably from detroit regardless.

What a nigger

I was on the other side of this before though
>selling car, regular new-ish shibox in pretty decent condition
>priced on the cheaper end because I want it gone
>dude calls me, wants show up in three days from a few hours away
>tell him I will not hold/reserve the car for him, first come first serve
>unlike the dude that screwed OP I actually tell him not to come down and just buy something else instead
>sell car to a chill dude the next day
>call the other dude to tell him the car's gone out of curtesy
>gets mad and starts talking about honour between men n'sheeeit
>ragequits after I remind him everything went down exactly as I told him it would
I think it's all those wheeler-dealer style TV shows (also youtube ofc) of the last 10-15 years that caused everyone to think they're some shrewd negotiating genius and will take nothing but what feels to them like a bargain.

As a seller usually Im happy to hold the listing for a short time if someone is willing to leave a deposit.
Nobody ever thinks to offers a deposit, but next time I would recommend offering to the seller to give him a $100 deposit if he is willing to take the listing down for a couple days. +/- on refundability. Usually it's worth it to lose $100 in a worst case scenario if youre already taking time off work and driving 8hrs.
t. I work 80hr weeks as a physician and rarely have the ability to just ditch work and go look at an interesting car for sale

Within reason. If I already have sevwral real offers out the gate and the 6th person to contact me is trying to make me hold the sale for a week, he should be willing to put up a deposit.
If there are no bites yet and its been listed for 2 weeks already then sure, what's another week.
Deposits are an underutilized option worth considering.
