Hybrid 2L sounds gay but the recycled plastic BMW engine has no place in a Toyota. Hopefully they put bones on it so that it's not a complete downgrade relative to the mk4. They really tarnished the supra name with all the fake vents, slushbox, maccas and plastic engine.

I wish the rumors that they were going to use Mazda's I6 were true.
IMO they fucked up with the V by adding a manual too late more than with the engine choice.

Why did the last generation Supra needed to be built with BMW parts?

Could it not have be based on the Toyota 86?
Could they not throw a bigger engine in it and make it work? Because the first and second gens of the Supra were just hotrodded Celica's.

I welcome this. Toyota hybrid is excellent. We don't need crazy power for the street, especially if it's a responsive power.

We need as many manual rwd options in the market as possible. Let's hope Nissan can stay alive and limp the Z along

BMW approached Toyota, having seen them successfully partner with Subaru for the 86, about joint financing a pair of sports cars to go up against Porsche. The Z4 against the Boxster, and the Supra against the Cayman. Toyota wasn't willing to develop a new inline6 for it at that time.

I've got a manual Subaru with their real AWD system, locked 50/50 FR split. I've had Subarus for 11 years now. I've also had RWDs 15 years total (used to always have 2 cars so it all overlaps).
AWD is one of my least favorite things about my Subaru, RWD is the best. I could see wanting AWD if it snows like crazy where you live, but RWD is the fun config and it's all I want in any kind of car or truck.

The bodywork shape was great but the fake vents were ultra mega-gay.
I don't mind a 4banger that's built like crazy, I just hope they stop doing such gay bodywork.

I rib my friend with a supra all the time and he just mutters something about how you could theoretically remove the vents even though it leads to an empty cavity that goes nowhere.
Makes it feel like a fake enthusiast vehicle.

Also doesnt Toyota still have the 2GR-FE V6? They sell that stuff to Lotus still for the the Emira. I'm sure a lot of people wouldnt mind having a cheap and reliable Emira.

kek, fucking toyota. They can't do anything right. First they put the worst configuration of engine available in the nu-86 when it would have been better in every possible way with an I4, then they put a high strung I3 in the corolla GR instead of a 2L Turbo 4, now they're killing off the B58 which is probably the best engine one of their cars has had since the 2JZ and they're making the supra a fucking hybrid LMAO

That was deliberate- the old Subaru platform has decades of aftermarket and know-how available. Lots of shit from a WRX will just work. Want big brakes? Pam, they fit. Wanna turbo it? There are more options than you can look at in one lifetime. Differential? WRXes eat diffs for breakfast, so smart guys at Quaife have made an indestructible one. Everything is at best bolt-in, at worst very familiar and doesn't take much time to re-engineer.
