I'm going to have a miserable commute soon and need an ecobox. I currently have a 6mt G35 but it gets poor mpg, takes premium, and maintenance at 150k is starting to pile up. Am I right in thinking turbo cars will be unreliable over 100k miles? Most of the recent K24 Hondas have CVT but I think some of the Acuras don't. I'd like something mid-size in case an idiot in an F-150 hits me on the highway.

I mean TECHNICALLY natural aspirated cars are better than turbos for reliability

As the great Jeremy Clarkson used to say, why waste money on an entirely different car when you could just ease up on the gas pedal instead?
The price difference in mpg is almost never worth it unless your current car gets less than 12 mpg, you already drive your current car like a scared grandma, you live in a shithole with $5+/gal gas, AND you'll be exclusively driving the econobox for 20+ years

I feel like all Toyotas carry a Toyota tax. Everybody knows they are reliable so Toyota charges a lot compared to other makes. You end up paying 40k for a reliable car with 20 year old tech, that is barely reliable than say, a Honda.

There are la half dozen manual Nissan Versas in my family and theyโ€™ve all been totally bulletproof as far as engine and drivetrain are concerned. Little here and there problems of all sorts, but theyโ€™ve never left anyone stranded over combined probably a million miles
Newest one is a โ€˜22, oldest I think is โ€˜13
Maybe one or two are autos Iโ€™d have to ask my brothers but theyโ€™re at least mostly manuals

The diff between 15 and 35 mpg is nearly $1400 a year, between 35 and 50 300.
The diff between a 6 liter fullcab truck and a prius is already 30 grand out the door, and another 20 thou in 10 years.

50 thousand dollars just from vehicle choice is a huge difference.

idk I've had a few mk4s. not even a German car guy but they are incredible shitboxes, and the tdis get nearly 50mpg. the only real issues are rust and dual mass flywheels. they regularly make it to 500k

Honda Clarity. Funky-looking PHEV mid-sized sedan that can be had for a song since it had garbage marketing. If you can get it in the next month and a half and make sufficiently little money, you can get up to $4k off the sale price if the sale is $25k or under.

4th Gen Prius Prime or Hyundai Ioniq PHEV are decent alternatives to the above if you need a hatch. Former is 180 inches long, latter is 176 inches.
