>buy 7500w 220v heater for garage
>internet says use 8/2 wire

I went to the store and the 8/2 wire was 3 wires. Isn't 220v 4 wires? Asking because I cannot into Google I guess and don't want to buy the wrong expensive shit, run it through the wall, then have the electrician connecting it all show up saying nope.

if you're hiring an electrician anyway why the fuck are you buying the wire

If you can't determine requirements for a three or four wire routing for 220V, you're not up to the task to do your own electrical work, especially high voltage electrical work.

8/2 is two wires for the load and one for grounding. 8/2 should be ok for your heater but i would recommend moving up to 6/2 so when you inevitably buy a EV you can charge it on the same wire. 220v can be 2 or 3 wires + a ground depending on if the appliance needs a neutral. if you could use google to figure out wire size vs. length but cant use it to figure out the rest of this simple project, you should just call a electrician its probably a $1500 job

>Isn't 220v 4 wires?
Assuming you're in the US and you mean 240V, you get this by running two phases from your load center to the receptical, and a ground wire, so no, it wouldn't be. The voltage difference between the two phases would be 240V

everyone else in this thread is a retarded pussy

You shouldnt be listening to "the internet" for wiring your heater.
What did the instructions say?
It did come with instructions, didnt it?

>Isn't 220v 4 wires?
No. That's why old dryers are 3 wire. The 4th in a 220v is the ground wire. Old 3 wires ran 2 hots and a neutral.

they know a lot more about electrical than /o/. I have a 220 outlet but I had my electrician friend install it for a case of beer because I don't know shit about that and know high voltage is scary.

It's 240v... 240v at 60 amps is 14.4kw. A 30A breaker will do 7.2kw.

It's 240Vpeak, 208Vrms in your garage. You can have a 50 amp breaker regardless of voltage. It's a matter of sizing the right cable to carry just over that 50 amps.

Actually this depends on what you have at your electircal service entrance
If your 120 Vrms service is made from center-tapping a secondary winding, then you have 240 Vrms between each phase
If your 120 Vrms service is made between neutral and either of two phases from a three phase system and, then there is 208 Vrms between those two phases

OP if you're the only one in your house then just go ahead and do the wiring yourself with a 8/2, put each one of the power conductors on a different live phase, take the risk and learn something
If you have children or parents in the house then ask on electrician

NEC, 250.140 says you can save copper by effectively using the neutral wire as a ground wire.
apparently common practice from 1940s till as late as the 1990s.
>idk mang, it depends on how floaty you want your ground

I ran the wires for my ev charger.
1. Just buy used wires. Bring a wire tester to test continuity, i spent like 30% less than a big box store.
2. Just ask your electrician what you need. I have no idea why someone would go out and spend hundreds of dollars on something with 0 prior research on something they obviously don't understand.
3. Just ask chatgpt what you need.

Needing 2 vs 3 wires depends on what you are installing, even at 240v. Look at the wiring diagram. When you need 3 wires it usually means part of the equipment is using only 120v(usually the controls). 8/2 means two load carrying wires PLUS a ground wire. 7500w at 240v(probably what you have) is 31.25amps so your wire is the right size, put it on 40amp double-pole breaker. If you are a dumbass please pretend you never read this post, maybe play try a coloring book or something.
