Have any of you ever played GTA 4? How close to real life would you consider the driving in the game?

Not at all but it's still a supremely comfy game with good physics and some nice car details. I like the way the car tilts forwards/backwards depending on how you accelerate or brake. That detail is not in GTA5.

The driving physics had some haters at the time but I loved it and it seems to be appreciated more widely now.
5's deicing physics are generally good too although they reduced the damage models for some reason.

It's exaggerated and there's some sort of traction control stopping you from having real fun but it's leagues better than 5 and it's oversized RC cars with sticky tyres

Haven't played it since the '00s but I remember it being a understeery and you had to use the handbrake a lot even in RWD cars.

Literally learned to drive in it specifically swimming and lots of derby aggressive driving pit maneuvers
Was fantastic on PC with handling and traffic density mods
Tried to mod v the same way but even with steering wheel ffb mods the physics system was just gutted so sad

It's not IRL level realistic, but it's still infinitely more realistic than the garbage handling in GTA V. You can also tip over an SUV in GTA IV if you take corners hard enough and that's pretty realistic for SUVs.

i'd say it's the most "realistic" out of all the GTAs,people complain about the body roll and loss of control but don't realize how fast you usually drive in the game,if you drive at the speed of the NPCs you will see its less "exaggerated"

Drive a blista compact and a comet and life is good.
Drive anything pigfat and you're going to slide off the road the first time you turn but the game is mostly straight grid roads outside of whatever they call Brooklyn/Queens in that game.

A lot of the cars feel like they have heavy understeer or wallow like big heavy old boats when trying to make small steering adjustments w/ keyboard or a gamepad. A bunch of the cars in the game *are* big heavy old boats, that being said.

As an aside, I've been playing through GTA 5 recently, and all in all I think 4 is the best all around GTA experience out of all of em.

This, but also OP, consider the following, the game takes place in new york and new jersey, so driving boats in tight city spaces does feel like that after a while. Exaggerated sure, but it kinda sets the vibe that you're driving a fuckhuge car in a densely packed city.

Newafags and zoomer misunderstood the whole "GTA4 was realistic"-thing.

GTA4 was realistic in comparison with the older GTA games. IV's car physics was mindblowing back then, no one ever said it was real-life-realistic, it was the real physics, not simulation, it was the best car physics we had at the moment. So it was realistic for its time period.

I played a lot of GTA4 in the previous decade
it's pretty close to real life, definitely the best in the series
there's bunch of stuff it doesn't even try to simulate though:
>tire wear and temperatures (it only pops if you do a really long burnout)
>brakes overheating
>understeer skidding (steering is filtered so game doesn't allow you to steer more than the grip allows)
>manual transmission
>fuel usage (neither any other fluid)
that's just off the top of my head, there's more

It's a real shame because Rockstar made the coolest physics engine ever for an open world car game but they didn't go too hard with the simulation autism because normalfags needed to beat the game too. What a missed opportunity.

Anonymous No.28694956 [Report]
>>28694945
Yes. I think both used the open-source Bullet physics engine for collisions and dynamics, too.
I doubt it's really state of the art any more, but even in all its bounciness it's definitely less janky than some uses of Havok and PhysX from the 00s.

I kind of miss these old games that put so much of their limited resources on simulating a world, and letting that become the gameplay.
It's risky as hell in terms of game design and no 100 million dollar game project wants to take risks like that, so most games these days take the safer path of very damped physics/dynamics (if any at all), tightly tuned and constrained gameplay, illustrated on your screen by 100 gigabytes of art and canned animations made by over 9000 starving art interns crunching overtime for 3 years.
Anonymous No.28694976 [Report]
>>28693503
This. You can see they wanted to go for realism compared to previous tites but ended up exxagerating it in all the wrong spots. Like, they wanted to have actually noticeable body roll this time, but the final result is just comically huge of it-all cars handle like citroen 2cv, as if sway bars are not a thing in the gta 4 world. At the same time you still cant properly drift because all cars have magical traction control that prevents any wheelspin beyond a set ammount. Its pretty retarded really, I dont really get people sucking off gta 4 for "muh realistic handling"

So i have been seriously considering replaying it considering it's my favorite in the series

It is not realistic, but it does capture the feeling of trying to drive fast in a crowded gridlocked city, while not actually having a gridlocked city, both for gameplay purposes (because traffic jams are not fun and games are supposed to be fun) and for performance reasons (PS3 was already melting from it). It's supposed to be heavy and awkward, and it is, showing that Nico is much more of a shooter than he is a driver.
A kinda similar thing is employed in Watchdogs- 1 and 3 have kinda shitty driving because Aiden and the average London schmuck are bad drivers, while 2's driving is a lot smoother because Markus is a good driver.

Agree with all of your points.

They made the driving dynamics pretty realistic - particularly for under steer and braking distance.

Unfortunately, gta was popular for being a FUN car game, not a tedium to get around with

I recently placed vice city redux or whatever where they rebuild vice city with the gta 4 engine. I really, really missed the vice city car handling

If in real life you drive a 70s landyacht with blown shocks and sway bars broken in half, then yes its pretty close. It's still way more engaging and immersive than GTA 5 in which they made a 180 with car physics.

It's still the most enjoyable GTA game driving-wise, even though the urban map doesn't really allow to experience it fully.

You still need to use OpenIV to load in the new car models to the IMG files, but you just copy over the default IMG to a new directory and keep loading them in there. The mod loader essentially loads whatever replacement file you put in the "mod" folder instead of the default file, it's pretty cool. So if you ever decide you want to go back to default everything, just wipe the mod folder and start again.

I get paid to do both. GTAIV is not "realistic". Neither is shooting people and all of the other nonsense, etc.
However, the driving physics mirror IRL more than other games do. Personally speaking when I first played gta4 it -was- like the cars 'drive like a boat', but, when you start to understand how they are intending you to drive vs. other games it's actually a great physics system.

It's also possible from scratch, but I can't really recall how to do it. I think it's mostly as simple as doing it all the same as you would with replacement, but there is an additional file or two that you have to mod so that the added cars will actually show up in traffic.
