I always cross the lines and everyone calls me crazy. Not crossing the lines has caused more accidents than crossing them. I've seen way more people wreck because they went too fast and tried to stick to "their" side and slid off the road. Whereas they could have dove to the inside of the corner and exited to the outside.

It got too hectic.
One night all the domestic rolled into an industrial complex- too about 15 minutes for all the cars to get parked.
Then the imports showed up and it was another 15 minutes.
Hundreds of cars.
First cars lined up and the cops rolled in behind them as the flag dropped (glad i wasnt one of those retards).

You weren't born to late to go street racing, just depends on what your local scene looks like; there are probably lots of active teams near you, but they survive off of not broadcasting themselves to the world. What region of the country are you in? Assuming you're in the US

It was never that huge here in the UK, but there were certain industrial parks where madlads with welded diffs used to cut loose with volvos and beemers. Good times. Occasionally a rich cunt would turn up with some hot JDM import, like an s13 or a skyline gt.
Dunno why that scene died. The filth (police) never paid us too much attention. I guess we just got old, and clutchs, diffs, tyres, gearboxes, etc, get expensive.

this is unironically good policing. they build rapport with the community and if anything goes wrong they're already on the scene.

i think the answer to illegal street racing, takeovers/sideshows, etc. is to built more race tracks and make them more affordable/accessible.
get people to take some safety courses, agree to some requirements, and sign liability waivers. then just have some firefighters and EMTs on hand in case there's an accident.
unfortunately this would be a hard sell to the average middle-aged or elderly voter that hates young people and doesn't want their tax money funding their fun.

Just block off streets for race events. They do that in Japan. Block off a street, local rally race or time attack happens, everyone is happy.
