give me a landmark nearby where you want to explore I'll drop you pins to check out.

I just use google maps nowadays. I used to e on those urbex listservs that kept you up to date on what tunnels got filled in or collapsed but it's not 2006

Well, step one involves going outside
If you've made it this far, step two involves walking and driving around until you find an abandoned building

I've had lots of luck looking through the historic places registry for my area and looking at each on google maps to see what's abandoned. Post covid, more than half of what was abandoned was turned into apartments or breweries but there's still stuff out there.

When I was at my lowest I dreamed of hobomaxing and riding the rails so I spent a lot of time walking along train tracks and exploring the buildings that are around them.
Most of my urbex now is related to going a low as possible and going up as high as possible. I enjoy lifting up grates/manhole covers and exploring(I have yet to wade through any smelly sewage, but I am prepared for it). I like scaling water towers, but I'm thinking out giving a wind turbine a climb eventually.

For finding abandoned buildings just cruise around to areas that you know are low income. I live in a once booming town in the rust-belt so finding old buildings is pretty easy. If you live in a newer development head towards the outskirts of an older city and you should be able to some urbex opportunities. Keep in mind to where you can park without being questioned or better yet bike(easy to conceal) or the best option walk there. Use google maps for both aerial views and street views(make sure you have most recent pics otherwise it can be quite the surprise finding that the building was demolished by the time you get there).
Also, don't limit your urbex to just abandoned places learn some infiltration skills and explore the subsystems of active buildings(the world is more security conscious now, but learning the basics of social engineering is invaluable).
If you do come across hoboes in your ventures just remember you are on their turf. I became friendly with a hobo in an area I would frequent, some are just out of their mind and can be pretty dangerous. Usually if I see fresh evidence of someone living there I'll leave immediately as to not disturb them.
But like with gun safety the number one rule is to have fun :^)

if you're just worried about mold just use a disposable n95, or if you want to be better (and you're concerned about asbestos) use a half face respirator w/ P100 canisters, which should cover basically everything other than fumes and vapors. Also wear gloves of some kind and wash your clothes afterwards, especially if you don't know what you're going to be dealing with.

Does there exist some rule based on superstition about taking stuff from abandoned buildings like there is with taking stuff from the ocean--not sure if this is even really a thing, I just heard it once (don't remember where) and it stuck with me.

I've seen at least two videos where people go exploring abandoned buildings and come out with epic loot, such as this one here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XB-rE3wTjko

If I take something with me, it's not gonna come along with a spookum is it? If I stumble upon something like an IBM model M during my escapades, will it come with a ghost waifu too, or does that only happen in Nippon? Probably the latter, I'd assume.

Also, unrelated tangent, but have you ever gone urban exploring as part of a group, and then run into another group doing the same? Does one group start chasing the other, or do you just nod and move past one another?

it depends. I don't believe you're gonna get spookied by taking stuff from abandoned buildings, but generally speaking it's frowned upon by the community at large. It's not a rule but more of a guideline for you to make your own morality-based decisions on.

Like taking a vintage keyboard from some absolutely trashed bando is fine, or taking some object from a building that's about to be demolished is fine. I often take small trinkets and stuff like that, but where people really start to hate it, and where a lot of us have a moral objection to it, is when you take some object that makes the place special. It's just shitty and ruins the fun for other people.

Another thing to consider is if you think there's a chance you are gonna get caught. Taking items from a bando can change your slap on the wrist or misdemeanor trespassing charge into a felony burglary charge instantly. It's just not worth it sometimes.

But at the end of the day it's up to you. Last time we were in an abandoned datacenter my buddy took a bunch of SSDs and harddrives from a cabinet and got mugged on the way out for his backpack. There are a lot of variables so just do what you think is right.

>Also, unrelated tangent, but have you ever gone urban exploring as part of a group, and then run into another group doing the same? Does one group start chasing the other, or do you just nod and move past one another?

Whenever this has happened to me it's been pretty chill. What you have to watch out for is scrappers. Those dudes can be methed out and aggressive.

*breathes in*

What the heck did you just say about my exploration plans, you old coot? I'll have you know I've traversed countless abandoned buildings and forgotten places, and I've uncovered secrets that would make your head spin. I am trained in the art of urban exploration, and Iโ€™ve scoured over a hundred locations without getting caught. Youโ€™re nothing to me but just another site to explore. I will document your property with a level of stealth and finesse that has never been seen before in this neighborhood, mark my words. You think you can stop me from wandering through your land? Think again, old man. As we speak, Iโ€™m scouting the area, making notes of every nook and cranny, and your property lines are being mapped right now, so you better be ready for my presence, gramps. The presence that uncovers the hidden beauty of your land. I'm coming in, and I can access over a thousand angles, and thatโ€™s just with my camera. Not only am I extensively familiar with all the best spots for urban exploration, but I have a whole network of fellow explorers ready to back me up, and I will use every trick in the book to capture the essence of your farm, you stubborn old timer. If only you could have known what unanticipated curiosity your little โ€œdonโ€™t come hereโ€ sign was about to bring down upon you, maybe you would have thought twice before trying to scare me off. But you couldnโ€™t, you didnโ€™t, and now youโ€™re about to witness the wonders of exploration firsthand. I will unleash a wave of creativity all over your land, and you wonโ€™t know what hit you. Youโ€™re about to see things you didnโ€™t even know existed, buddy.

Sometimes I go up onto the railway tracks and walk through the tunnels/over the railway bridges at night. It started because I was looking for secluded places I could grow some dope plants, and along railways is about as good as you're going to get in my overcrowded country.

Anyway, they spent enough public money on high fences, barbed wire, thick gates and such to keep people out. I was considering putting some old carpet over the top of the fence and climbing over -- but then I looked down. All the work they put into securing the area was foiled by the gap under the big gate. I got down on my belly and caterpillar crawled right underneath it, little guy that I am. No problem at all, I had my own personal entrance in fact.

So I looked all around up there, but I could tell that railway staff had been doing nightshifts up there at one point, and that they might do again. It was all far too travelled for dope growing unless I wanted to treck a lot further out of town high up over the railway bridges, and risk being seen when the sun is coming back up. But it was a fun time, going where I shouldn't and exploring a place that 99% of people will never go.

>How do I find abandoned buildings near me
I just find them while driving around and I stop in and take a bunch of photos. Its good that I do because the places I visit have a bad habit of getting demolished or renovated a year or two later so my photos tend to end up being the last documented record of the place. Pic related is an abandoned mechanic shop in the middle of town I visited once. One of the doors was unlocked so I invited myself in for a look.

Basically just wander around, be curious, be bold, and find places.
