Pyrenees have the most beautiful forests imo and is quite diverse with the eastern side much drier and hotter whereas the western side is very lush and wet

The Alps are of course the Alps, but for something different that you wouldn't get in say Switzerland I'd recommend the southern part. The clash between the Mediterranean climate and the high peaks produces interesting landscapes and flora

The Massif Central is underrated, the geology there is very different from the big 2 previously mentioned you have plateaux cut by deep river gorges, ancient volcanoes, the lowest population densities of the country (which doesn't mean it's "wilderness" but it sure is peaceful), places that look barren as fuck or lush forests in the Cévennes, and again in the southern part you have a very interesting clash between the Mediterranean climate and the mountain climate which means in a few kilometers you can go from dry scrublands to mossy forests and fresh springs

Never been to the Jura but it looks cool, the mountains there are shaped like long ridges so I'd imagine it would be nice to hike alongside that

Never been to the Vosges either but they are heavily forested and completely full of ruined castles to check out on the way

Corsica is god tier, just gorgeous and extremely varied from the turquoise beaches to 2000+ meters high peaks and towering native pine trees, but if you're going to mainland France then it's a bit our of one's way

And of course that's only the mountains but if you are interested in nature and wildlife in general then there are plenty rivers to kayak, estuaries filled with birds, local geological curiosities, places where you can just have "countryside walks" from on old village to another in order to sample the food and architecture or whatever, etc

If I had the powers of God I couldn't engineer a comfier mountain range than the Pyrenees. Uphill of a place called Aix les Thermes has some epic terrain that will make your palms sweat just looking at it.
I prefer the Spanish side of the range myself, though.

Yes sound advice, I'm sure OP intended to go /out/ in the housing blocks of Marseilles, but thanks to your input he will now realize the woods are a better option
Keep up the good work and consider contributing to American threads with similar posts such as "avoid camping in the hood in Memphis", we need your wisdom there

The Calanques of Marseille and Cassis are actually pretty good /out/ locations.

I can't speak for the Pyrenees, but everything north of Nice and south of Briançon, Mercantour park notably, is very wild and getting wilder by the years because nobody lives and farms in the mountains anymore

I don't know if it was you or someone else who did this thread before, I searched for the place I went camping when I was a kid and didn't find it until yesterday, glad you made a new thread so I can respond you.
I went to Porté-Puymorens when I was a kid, did a fucking long hike from the camping to the Étang du Lanoux and back. Fucking great. Nice caves too although I didn't do much exploring because I was 10, but I plan on returning someday.

Vercors plateau is underrated Kino. There's nobody over there, no refuges, nothing. Heck there's also barely any water.
Pic I took.

I arrived at France yesterday. A friend of mine had done the GR20 and I'm probably going to do it next month, it's not too expensive to go to Corse. That trail is apparently the most demanding one of France, and it seems more similar to the kind of trail I have done before in the Andes. But if you can't go to Corse I still have some recommendations a french dude gave me in a refugee during summer (southern hemisphere summer):
>Tour des fiz
>GR5
>HRP
>Tour de Queyras
>Tour de la Vanoise
He also told me that in case I needed more information I could find it in the website of FFRP.
I specifically asked him for non crowded trails, since I'm not used to crowded ones and I completely hate it even when I see just a few people.

Thanks lads. To be fair, the golden hours lighting helps. Usually I'm stuck with snapshits with harsh daylight, doesn't help that I usually tend to hike when the weather is good. Sometimes a few clouds can help.

Another place I can recommend is the "La Vanoise" National Park. I've been there more than I can count. Staying in the village called Pralognan-la-Vanoise is perfect if you want to do dayhikes and use the village as a comfy resting base. It's at the intersection of two valleys, meaning quite a bit of possibilities, and the most important part is you don't need any car to reach the trails' starting point. As I don't really have a car (or rather, my old shitbox from 1995, but I certainly won't try to cross the country with it), taking the TGV from Paris then the Bus from Moutiers to Pralognan-la-Vanoise just werks perfectly. Connections are nice in summer. This can be useful for a foreign traveler, as I know renting a car is always bothersome.
Oldass pic I took 12 years ago, the "Col de la Vanoise" is a classic hike in the area (though expect lot of people during sunny weekends). The area is surrounded by a nice dome of glaciers, and you can do a 4-5 days hike called "Tour des glaciers de la Vanoise". Camping is unfortunately forbidden in the national park, it's one of the very few in France where it's forbidden to pitch a tent. I think it was the only one with such an exception for decades. The tour can be done from refuges to refuges, though in summer you certainly won't be alone, but it will be less crowded than, say, the Tour du Mont-Blanc. Late June or September should be quite perfect though.

i would throw my hat in for Corsica, great landscape, great trails, very friendly people

i summited Monte Cinto
>https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LNvcKDGOz4E
obviously not my video, but, thats what it looks like, yeah its not as tall, or big as some other mountains but the rocky nature of the place, hiking up there from "traditional" midetaralian scrub brush, then to coniferous forest you could swear were Sweden, to bare rocky mountain
I kinda snuck in through a ski resort that was closed for the season shhh dont tell the Gendarmarie
very nice, also, if you´ve never hung out at a mountain side bar with Foregin Legion dudes (active and retired) top 10, and they will invite you for ice cream the next day, one guy even gave me a huge jar of home made fig jam and a 2L bottle of essentially moonshine
good times

OP I can vouch for what >>2818711 said. The Calanques is a really cool place, the water's beautiful, weather is nice year round and the scenery is really comfy. You could also try hiking up Mt Sainte-Victoire which is relatively nearby.

The whole of the south of France (minus the hemorrhoid called Marseille, but you have no reason to be there) is really beautiful with lots of awesome /out/ opportunities.

If you're still in the area, definitely do the Gorges du Verdon, absolutely kino. There are hiking trails. I'd avoid it on an abnormally high T° day though, shit's hot.

I remember doing hikes as a kid around parts of the maginot line. Very cool to little me to stumble on tank walls and things all overgrown and hidden in the forest

I'm from Alsace. I can recommend hitting all the cute lakes we got in the mountains. Lac Vert is probably my favorite alongside Lac de Blanchemer, most people prefer the Lac des Truites though. Definitely do the Sentier des Roches and the ridges on top of it... All those things are very close to each others, you can do them in one trip.
Pic attached is from this week's trip near the Lac des Perches, further south.
Hit all the cute villages around Colmar while you're at it, and the castles/ruins.

Yeah Vercors is golden, that's where my father is from. I need to go back and go on top of the Mont Aiguille...

Anyways, check out Alsace as a whole. It's one of the last populated regions in France that didn't turn into a complete shithole. Just avoid Mulhouse.
