Can someone who is not an /out/ person eventually get into it? I fancy the idea of doing it but I don't have a lot of experience and I'm afraid of not being made for it

It's literally this easy. If you're really crippled by the feeling of inadequacy, state parks generally put on engaging outdoor activities like ranger led hikes etc. One near me was doing a backpack/camping trip and they even landed out any of the gear you'd need. But seriously just go for a walk outside. It doesn't require anything but an able body.

start in your backyard/around environments you are familiar with. work on plant identification, insect identification, bird identification (if that interests you).

become more familiar with your surroundings, then start going farther out. make sure you can find water wherever you go though.

go to nature trails, conservation areas.
there's one near me that's owned by the Audubon society, maybe your local Audubon society also has some nice trails.
Also grow a garden if you have any land. It doesn't have to be food, I find growing vegetables boring I just like to grow interesting native plants for birds/wildlife and my own enjoyment.
2 flowers I grow every year that are very easy to grow are cosmos and zinnias. By late summer they go to seed and little birds eat off them, swinging back and forth on the stems. It's fun to watch.

quickest way to being an outdoorsman is money because with money you dont need to learn anything. You can just throw money at the issue
the alternative is actually learning outdoors skills like starting a fire from scratch, setting up a tarp tent, learning to tie knots.
all of that can open up a ton of gateways.
Getting good at knot tying can save you a ton of money on equipment.
Forget a bag? lash some sticks together
boom, you have a box made out if sticks.
Forget your hammock?
Have a couple hours free
Good at knots?
boom, paracord hammock.

need to make a swedish torch?
You dont need a chainsaw
you just need either an axe or a foldable saw. Cut some small logs and tie them together with a timber hitch or lash

of course you can avoid all of this by spending thousands of dollars on equipment

You don't need an axe or a saw for regular hiking.
