Do any of yall take your dogs backpacking? What kind of gear do you bring for them? What's your sleeping set up like?

This little dork doesn't like to get his paws dirty. Or the cold. Or the warm.

I wish I could take my cats hiking. They are old now and it wouldn't work but they only have a few years left (10 years old), maybe the next cat I get I will train to walk on a leash from a young age. Is this reasonable?

Planning on taking my dog this summer about 90-100 miles through the Siskiyous. He is pretty obsessed with birds and rodents but has pretty good recall despite it. I would imagine the only thing you need to bring would be the dog food and some kind of water bowl. He often drinks from streams on his own anyway. I can't really imagine needing anythi g extra besides maybe a lead to tie the dog off while sleeping

She carries her own water and treats. Doesn't like stopping for even a moment, so getting her to sleep in a tent is a challenge. Had a scare one time when she managed to get out during the night and just roamed around the tent until I got up, now I just hook her harness to my belt.

No. There is a reason it is illegal to bring dogs into the National Parks and Forests.

My girlfriends grandma is a pretty well known trainer and has like 6 prized showdogs (not gonna dox.) But I've seen her raise quite a few puppies and they'll all tend to be obsessed and interested in animals like that as well. Sounds like your dog has that hunter instinct. Doing walks where your dog is bound to run in to that shit and then making them sit and calm down - then rewarding them with a treat or a toy they can abuse works really well. lil bastard will get the message over time and might save you a few trips running after your dog. Enjoy anon

Maybe. My dad used to take our cat on a leash in the yard for lulz. It seemed to be having a very nice, enriching time- but I would imagine they could get spicy sometimes and be harder to track than a dog if they got lost somehow. I honestly don't like the thought of taking my animals outside of the yard because they're like innocent children, just happy and probably aren't thinking something would hurt them or whatever. Then again, I tend to spoil my pets, so I'm probably at fault for that

No sleeping pad, but I do have a light cot that breaks down pretty small. The dog will usually just curl upalongside it where I just leave a wool blanket for him

No dogs in the national forest? You must not be American. Even at Crater Lake I am pretty sure you can have them on leash. Considering I take mine all the time hu ting grouse and quail and haven't ever had a problem with the forest jannies. Picrel, my dog in the siskiyou national forest.

Thanks anon. Sounds pretty sweet. The lady I got my dog from used to train her setters for field and show and she gave me about the same advice. Only differenceis I can-t make him sit because he needs to point. He's super smart and picks things up the first or second time but has a little bit of the adhd. What kind of dogs did she train?

she trained greyhounds. so pretty much they run for like 1 minute full speed then are just docile and tired lol. hell even around the house if you hid a treat somewhere obscure, got him to find it from the scent - then did that sort of routine where he has to sit and stay and remain calm could be beneficial to resisting the urges to run off until you give the okay.

wish i still had my adventure dog but he got too old and his hips gave out on him. he was a beagle and would go after squirrels and geese and would try to escape the yard any time a door opened. but he loved that shit when we'd hide stuff for him. caught him a few times burying his bones in my ol ladies flowerpots

>There is a reason it is illegal to bring dogs into the National Parks
You can bring dogs into most national parks. Most just have restrictions about where they can go. Grand Canyon - trails on the rim are fine, but they can't go into the canyon. Yosemite - paved areas are fine, but backcountry is not.

>and Forests.
Never heard of any rules about national forests and dogs.

Greyhounds are great. My dog gets along with them pretty well compared to most other dogs they usually tend to just run around instead of playing rough.
Hiding treats, dummies, wingsand things are a pretty good way of engaging the dog for sure. Gordon setters are super smart and it makes it bother easier and harder to train this little guy. I love hiking with him we at least do 5 miles each day before work and then on the weekends we'll do more depending on what I feel up for. Itdefinitely makes it a lot better especially during the hunting season. Maybe someday you'll get another dog to venture with.

keeping my eyes open at the shelters for another dog. it's just shit because i live in an apartment at the moment and they're hesitant to letting people adopt the bigger dogs that actually like being outside lol and fair enough. i'd feel bad having a dog that loves being outside if i don't have a nice big backyard for it.

ONE DAY THOUGH. safe travels anon give your little guy a journey he'll love.

My dog loves going fishing with me. She goes crazy when she hears the reel start to whine. She doesnt want to bite them or anything, just stare uncomfortably. Whenever I eat the fish i catch, ill cook one unseasoned for her.
I always take her hiking with me but ive only taken her out on one overnight trip so far. She was nervous staying in the tent because of all of the noise outside
I dont think she slept very well because she was really tired and didnt want to walk much the next day.
She is well trained to stay close to me but i keep her on a leash for the most part. She is only off the leash when we are going to be staying in one place for a little bit.
