I'm planning a vacation/hiking and camping trip to Washington, the goals are Mt Olympus and Mt Ranier and if I have enough time some other stuff like Mt St Helens. I don't want to loiter in Seattle or Portland for obvious reasons. Problem is I haven't done a trip like this in years and am struggling to plan it, where to go first/last, stay, what to do, how long each location will take, parking, campsites, etc. Anyone have any experience out there able to provide any guidance for my plans? Where would you recommend camping or should I get an AirBnb so I can shower?
>>2822797 (OP)Are you planning to climb those mountains? Both are hard and heavily glaciated.
If you just want to see them, Rainier is easy you can drive right up to it. However even seeing Mt Olympus requires an 18 mile one way (so 36 mile round trip) hike.
>>2822812I have experience outdoors and camping but have limited experience mountaineering. The closest mountains to me are the Adirondacks which are quite different and no where near as challenging. I don't expect the others on my trip will be able to summit the mountain so we would primarily be hiking in the area and maybe camping out. Maybe partially climb it. I would love to summit both of them but need to be realistic.
>>2822812And what about Mt St Helens? Can you walk up that one and around the crest without getting too technical?
>>2822814>>2822817On Rainier you can hike from Paradise to Camp Muir, about half way up the mountain, safely. After that point you get into serious glacier territory.
MSH is just a hike. You can do that no problem.
