I've been to the South multiple times on business and recreational trips, and never seen chiggers but I've heard people talk about them. Are they really that big of a deal?

You don't see chiggers. Your legs just start itching like crazy and don't stop for a week or two. Once you've had them several times, you can tell what kind of areas they live in, but you can't actually see them. I see a certain kind of clearing with tallish grass, and I just know, "There's the chiggers."
Only way to avoid them is the sulfur sock.

They're really not that bad. Just wear long sleeves and a hat with good coverage. While at camp build a fire to smoke them away. If no fires are allowed, citronella candle.
