You're sitting to close to the fire. I won't annoy you with the fluid dynamics, but simply put, obstacles generate a lower pressure if there's ANY wind. If you're close enough, that lowered pressure will attract smoke befre it rises.
Stay low while starting the fire, take some distance as it's starting to burn, and only come in close again once it's burning hot enough that the smoke rises.
Unless you're starting to freeze, in that case, man up and tolerate the smoke. It beats dying.
