I'm interested in learning to surf. Any advice to not have the wave crash down on top of you and be pulled under?

I was wondering about swimming out past the break and just floating around. I'd guess so... But is this hard?

I've been bodyboarding first to get some experience. I also need to lose some weight before I can get myself to pop up

you can crosstrain with skateboarding if you already don't. the balance translates over. actually, balancing on a surfboard is easier in my opinion. the first time I ever tried surfing was when I had already been skateboarding for 5+ years and I immediately found it fairly easy, granted the waves were not big and I had also done a lot of skimboarding. balance is balance, you can train it many ways.

im assuming you know how to swim. skip the board entirely and surf the wave with your body. its way more gnarly

Go to a custom surfboard shop and have them make you a surfboard with a confederate flag design.

Hmm. I'm afraid that would be too politically correct... I'd need something more offensive.

Rent soft top
Find less crowded break
Get to paddling.

There's no "secret" for beginners, you have to build up paddling endurance so you can get out to the break and catch waves.

not the anon but I'd tell you to get a long board since it's pretty similar to a normal skateboard but much easier to learn

yes it sucks, but look at it this way...
> spend $500-1000 on gaming and goyslop over the span of a year or two
or
> spend that much on outdoor hobbies
it's much easier to swallow the pill with that perspective. if you're a poorfag it also forces you to actually use the shit you buy many times unlike richfags who buy it, use it once, then store it in the garage forever

who gives a fuck. the only real risk with doing anything like skateboarding as an adult is you can get hurt, even something simple can result in a torn ligament and such. not that it should scare you away, but you gotta keep stuff like that in mind if you aren't already athletic and don't want the risk. much less likely to get hurt surfing, but also more likely to drown or get bitten by a shark. pick your poison. life is full of risks, it's up to you if they're worth it or not. you should however, never give a fuck what people think or base your hobbies around "will I look dumb."
