I am sure you've all seen it before. You're on a hike, and you come across a mud puddle. There is plenty of space on the side of the trail to pass by without stepping in the mud. But, for some reason there are adult sized footprints right down the middle of the mud puddle. So my question is: what kind of person is walking through mud? Is it intentional or are they just stupid and/or unaware of their surroundings?

You would intentionally dirty your gear, thus making it heavier and less breathable, while also risking getting wet feet? How laughably short are your hikes that you take such liberties?

Oh shameful, I am not terminally online like you. How will I ever recover from this? You got me, I am overwhelmingly defeated. I guess I'll have to crawl away from 4chan and spend more time outside.

I have waterproof boots. This shit doesn't even phase me. The only time i had issue with wet feet is when I arrived at a flooded junction that I had to cross to get to the other side of where i needed to go. The river next to it overflowed, turned the entire junction into basically a swamp. All the way down to my knees in some spots. I wouldn't do it again though looking back on it unless i bring a second pair of shoes and socks.

Anyway small mud puddles, snow, streams? absolutely. Snow patches though can be deceiving so i'd probably always probe it before you step and realize it sinks in down to your knees, but that's a minor annoyance. Nothing like water crossings.

If your photo is as deep as it gets then there's no excuse not to just step through it. Even non-waterproof trail runners would get through that shallow of mud without you feeling it.

isn't stepping through mud just as damaging to the trail as stepping around it? you're just deepening it instead of widening it, and making future mud/puddle/drainage issues worse.
trails with heavy pack mule usage often develop drainage and mud issues because they step heavily on the same spots over and over

it's easy to fix a trail that is getting too deep
it's not easy to bring back vegetation without closing the trail for prolonged time to avoid people from continuing to widen it
