Vortoscope Archived
>Alvin Langdon Coburn recalled that the Vortographs he created in January 1917, including this one, were the “first purely abstract photographs.”
>Of the tool used to create these images, Coburn wrote in his autobiography, “The instrument is composed of three mirrors fastened together in the form of a triangle, and resembling to a certain extent the Kaleidoscope—and I think many of us can remember the delight we experienced with this scientific toy. The mirrors acted as a prism splitting the image formed by the lens into segments.”
>The poet Ezra Pound, who had introduced Coburn to the short-lived London-based Vorticism movement, wrote, “The tool called vortoscope was invented late in 1916. Mr. Coburn had long desired to bring cubism or vorticism into photography. Only with the invention of a suitable instrument was this possible.”

Kodachrome Look Archived
Been digging around online trying to figure out how to get that K64 look (big, punchy, saturated, picrel), but found basically nothing. Everyone either goes for K25 or just completely misses the saturation.

Not trying to do a perfect emulation or anything, I just want those insane saturated skin tones and deep blues, but every time I try, the edit falls apart. Feels like Lr/Ps just can’t push it far enough, like the digital files don’t have the room. Which makes no sense, since I’ve got a gallery full of scanned film that pulls it off.

Anyone here actually manage to get close? Or is it just a lost cause with digital?

Anyway, dumping a few Shorpy rips.

Nadar on Photography Archived
>The theory of photography can be learned in an hour and the elements of practising it in a day... What cannot be learned is the sense of light, an artistic feeling for the effects of varying luminosity and combinations of it, the application of this or that effect to the features which confront the artist in you. What can be learned even less is the moral grasp of the subject — that instant understanding which puts you in touch with the model, helps you to sum him up, guides you to his habits, his ideas and his character and enables you to produce, not an indifferent reproduction, a matter of routine or accident such as any laboratory assistant could achieve, but a really convincing and sympathetic likeness, an intimate portrait.
Was Nadar right? Could you really learn the basics of photography in an hour? And the rest of it is just artistic talent?

Log curves in smartphones Archived
This seems to be a topic which includes more unjustified opinions and shilling than researched facts. Searching the internet mainly brings you just Youtube videos, app ads and R*ddit topics where every other claim log curves in smarthpone videos are perfect and every other claim it's just a gimmick.

Modern smartphone's curves tend to default Rec709 in 8-bit and HLG or PQ in 10-bit modes. My Snoy Xperia 5 II has Rec709/HLG by default and Camera2API reports the curve (I don't know which one) has density of 128 points. Apps like Mcpro24fps, Filmic Pro can output video files with log curves applied and I'm interested how these curves are achtually produced/achieved. Some people say those are just custom curves applied over manufacturer's default curve (which may or may not include reverse tone mapping). And then there are some claims where the manufacturer's curve is replaced with the selected log curve. App devs don't reveal their methods and I can't find any credible research about it.

Obviously what stood out to me right away is that it has no IBIS and no interchangeable lens / stuck on f4(???).

But then, I took a look at the sample images that people have taken with it in low light, and they look fine? they look like something we could get at f2 with a Leica Q, etc.

I found item for sale on ebay, looks like the common and crappy canon18-55mm lens but there is a strange aperture where the front element should be, it doesn't look like a diy thing but factory made. I have never seen something like that, anyone knows that this might be? at first I thought it could be a display model but the description says it closes when the image stabilization is turned on.. makes it even more weird.
I'd buy it out of curiosity but it is in Canada

Just fucking ask. Its not that difficult to be a normal person.
The dude relisted it with new photos and now we can clearly see that the entire inside of the lens is busted and things are probably rattling around, hence the aperture at the front.

>get a little nervous since it's hard to tell if cartel types or construction worker types
>conversation goes on and I get the feeling they are cool
>eventually they start suggesting me shoot a a video with the new car one of the guys bought

>take pictures, dumb bitch gets mad and tells me I need to auto focus on her face and makes a snide remark about how I'm the professional

on one hand this is cool and actually fun but on the other hand it can be a lot of pressure. its good practice in my eyes to be able to do a quick exercise around filiming other people so I went with it. you have to literally think on the spot.

anyways just wanted to share cause it was kinda all over the place. the whole time i was with those mexican guys i was kinda nervous they were trying to steal my camera but they turned out to be chill.

Sx-70. Modded. Always.
>>4465296 (OP)
Even though polaroids are the biggest instant format available, they are still tiny. Only shoot subjects that fill almost the entire frame and where detail is not fundamental (e.g. a single, well framed object or a portrait)

Anyway, you have a gen 3 polaroid which even has manual controls...
