The EU subsidises the entire European dairy industry.
They did that ever since the 1950s to encourage agriculture.
Because farmers got paid per litre, they got a bunch more cows to make a whole lot more milk.
What wound up happening is that there's so fucking much supply that the milk isn't profitable, and the farmers are now dependent on this EU subsidy.
To help handle the excess supply and rid of it somehow, they pushed a nice ad campaign, "melk is goed voor elk" and the likes. The dairy section in Dutch stores is still as big as the vegetable section, inundated with all the options.
Skimmed, whole, churtle, kefir, yoghurt, skimmed yoghurt, "greek" yoghurt, skyr, "skyr", custards, mixed custards, and then there's the 4 rows of unique ice cream products ranging from the typical American syrup slop to whole rolls of organic grass-fed cow's milk-based Italian soft ice.

I don't mind the milk, fucking love it.
But the EU subsidy is a serious economic problem.
