Why don't modern gyms take inspiration from the ancient Greeks?
I'm talking about a place where:

> you practice martial arts like pankration
> you discuss philosophy, science, and politics between sessions (like they did in the palestra)
Back then, gyms were centers for physical *and* intellectual development. Nowadays it's just:

Western culture is a culture of space. Even in athletics and bodybuilding, we have this innate preference for power and outward expansion. In the Western conception, the human persona is tripartite in the spirit, mind, and body,and each is ordered into one being but each distinct nonetheless. The Greeks didn’t see it that way. They saw themselves as almost static objects. Bodies were quasi-spiritual things. Those Greek statues (the real ones, not the Renaissance initiations) are as fundamentally religious as Michaelangelo’s Pietá. The gymnasiums were something more akin to a Benedictine monastery or maybe a Renaissance university than our modern gyms. When you consider things this way you realize we already have OUR Greek gymnasium and that’s reflected in the German actually.
