I would consider this a happening. At the least it represents a major escalation in anti-immigration unrest, not just in Northern Ireland but also the UK more broadly. It provides a preview of the the kind of social unrest that could occur in Britain proper down the line. Also it has the potential to spread to Scotland via the loyalist connection, and from there drift south to England.

There are already a good amount of Irish Catholics in the area, and according to some accounts I've heard there are young Catholics in the riots. I also feel that this was to some extent inspired by similar (though distinct in some ways) anti-migrant unrest in the Republic, such as he Dublin riot in 2023 and the riots in Coolock. You hear a lot of the loyalist rioters referencing the protests in the south and some talk about bringing the communities together, Catholic and Protestant.

The larger Catholic/Nationalist community in Northern Ireland (distinct from Irish people in the republic) is still pro-immigration on the whole when compared to the Prot/loyalist community, whether this will continue to deepen as a contrarian response to the loyalist mobs remains to be seen.
