They got rid of him because he wanted to go after seats in Democrat strongholds that were guaranteed wins for Democrats, but were filled with the do-nothing politicians that were just collecting a paycheck and most likely collecting money from kickbacks and insider-trading. He wanted to put younger and more proactive people in those positions, not just some old ghoul that won because they happened to be a Democrat and didn't really have to do anything to win or stay in office. This was a big no-no for the party as a whole, because that's like going after the mafia's no-work/no-show jobs.
